'82 - '86 were my high school years. I spent them as a freak/anti-preppy/band/orchestra dude who felt that occasionally attendance was optional in lieu of a nice day-trip to a local park for some therapeutic frisbee, cigarettes and other things mom and dad warned me never to do.
I was a metal head by proxy. I personally listened to Rush, Zep, Yes, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Cure, The Femmes, Steely Dan as well as Weather Report and Stanley Clarke's many recordings - and more - A rather non-metal list. I never owned a single metal album and when I had control over the set list or the radio dial, it was always rock, fusion or alt.
But all my musician friends were metal heads and since I wanted to be in bands with them, I ended up getting a full-on education in triplets from Mr. Harris as well as a dose of "hang on for your life" riffs from the likes of Queensryche, Anthrax and Megadeath - even Flotsam and Jetsam. While it was not my cup of tea, I wouldn't have traded that intense immersion in pure stamina-based music for all the tea in China. Talk about a great way to build finger strength and learn scales and arpeggios!
Loved playing it - wasn't much of a fan of listening to it.
