I know it was designed by Steve Vai who is highly talented and well respected. Of course it's practical and unique but it detracts from well designed and very attractive body lines. It looks like it does't belong there but it's what Steve wanted so there you go. It also begs the question..."What? you don't have a gig bag so you routed out a handle in your guitar?".
