View attachment 5416575 in the 90's, my buddy had a Steve Vai Gem Ibanez. Going for $3,000+ now. He might still have it---he is still playing with Rusted Root.
I know it was designed by Steve Vai who is highly talented and well respected. Of course it's practical and unique but it detracts from well designed and very attractive body lines. It looks like it does't belong there but it's what Steve wanted so there you go. It also begs the question..."What? you don't have a gig bag so you routed out a handle in your guitar?". Is it that hard to carry a guitar? Does it weigh that much?

Let's not consider mods.

IMO, and in no particular order:

Roland G77. The "sustain bar" (black hanger) is even more peculiar than the MIDI capability:

Ibanez Ashula. I am certain Jaco would fiddle with this:

Ibanez SRKP4. Integrated Kaoss Pad:

Any bass with a tremolo. Here is the Washburn Bantam Whammy:

What else?
These aren't so much whacky as they are cool, but they are unusual. I own two.

That Ibanez SRKP4 was very cool, only wish they integrated it into a nicer bass, there was a whole lot of fun to be had with the Kaoss pad and the built in effects. At the time I had that bass and a Source audio BEF pro with a hot hand. I could to the dub step Wub-Wubs and then blip my finger onto the Kaoss pad to shift the pitch up or manipulate the time in almost the same motion. I ultimately let it go, it was cool though!
