What’s your preference Jazz Bass or Precision.

I'm curious to know what bass players prefer a jazz bass or precision bass. Both are great. Do most consider the Jazz the ultimate go to, or can you get away with just about anything with the precision.. I'm just curious what others think.

My 1st good electric bass was an Aria Pro II SB-700. I absolutely loved it. Got away from gigging and playing all together for a while and sold it. When I started getting back into playing, I needed a bass. I always loved a jazz bass. Bought a MIM one. I really loved the sound, but it just didn't feel right. I ended up selling it and picked up another early 80's SB -700. Never looked back.

I never was drawn to the P-bass.

If you made bodies for a J and a P out of the same piece of wood, the J would be heavier because its shape is slightly larger.

I have never, in 40 years of playing, owned or gigged a P bass or a Jazz bass. And I'm quite happy with the basses I've had and have.

I love both. Always been a jazz guy but the P has proven Supreme in the current mix I play in. But always, a P with a jazz neck

I prefer my Js or my PJ over my P. But when I do pick up the P and play it from time to time, it makes me smile just as much as my other basses.

I think I'm a Jazz fan because I prefer the versatility of two pickups vs one. And I'm a fan of the Jazz body and neck specs vs a Precision. The truth is, my P will do everything I need it to do and more. So I don't look at a Jazz is better or a P is better, like you said, they're both great. I just prefer my Js over my PJ and P, most of the time.

I'd like to say I am equal to both because I love playing both but, in reality my very first bass that I picked up at a music store happened to be a junk copy of a Geddy Lee-type 70's Jazz and it kind of cemented me into being a Jazz bass kind of guy. I do have and play a Precision also nowadays but I always go back to the Jazz shape and feel. It's just more comfortable to me and always has been.

I've had an actual Fender Jazz Bass since new in '75. We've shared a lot of time. From the round wound early days to our current flat wound state, it remains a great bass.

Over the last 50 years I've managed to figure out VVT. After 20 I still get confused on the Rickenbacker layout, although it's getting better all the time.
