Yes, the springs. Lots of them!! I've accidentally kicked the thing the other day while it was plugged in. Oh the gloriously crushing reverb! My poor collie thought the sky was falling, she had a fright of her life!

Yup I flip-flop back and forth but that's my thing right now. One P with Jamerson flats, One P with Rotosound rounds. Jazz's with either Rotosounds or Dunlop MM Super Brights.Jazz w/ wounds, P with flats.
I just can't pick.
Ah, the eternal question..lol..thats okay though.
I own both, and like both..I alternate on both of them when playing live (meaning that one stays at home)..The jazz is super punchy, and cuts through the mix, you can somewhat emulate the sound of a P bass on a Jazz, but it cant emulate the fat low mid grunt of a P bass.
At home while learning stuff, it's always on the P bass..and playing the Jazz after that is an absolute breeze.
A Jazz and P bass works for me, the only other bass I will probably get is a 5 string (not a Fender) for various gigs.

I prefer the precision neck carve (well, actually, I think it's what would be equivalent to the B neck), I love everything about the precision sound and simple electronics setup. And they look sexy! Right now all my basses are precisions. I'm sure I'd get along fine with a Jazz if I had to, but they've never held the same instant appeal for me.
I'm sure it's been said, but, "Invalid without a poll." Also, I prefer a P over a J. However, I prefer a humbucker in the P spot or a P/J over either a P or a J.
I'm definitely a Pbass player over a Jazz bass. Have owned more pbasses, than i've played jazz basses. Only a handful of Jazz shaped basses held their own & sounded good to me (a long forgotten copy my friend used to own, had a heavy weight & chunky profiled neck. Ibanez black Eagle just had thunderous tones, again weight was awesome. & a squier Affinity i had at one point in time, modded with a push/pull for series/parallel wiring. Sold it to a friend who needed a bass).
Pbasses aren't the first basses i ever saw (my dad had either taped this performance, or somehow found Kiss live in San Fransisco 1973-74. I saw Gene's Grabber before seeing any FSO). But Dee Dee Ramone got me into the whole Pbass thing, & just the overwhelming use of it to this day, had me hooked from the first time i picked one up. Now, i own 7 soon to be 9 (a fretless & another maple/maple fretted neck variety) to complete the array of pbass tones. I can gel with a jazz bass, but really depends. I'd rather have a pbass over a jazz any day of the week.

I haven't read all of the responses, but first a question: WHERE IS THE POLL???
I'm a J kinda guy, but I have versions of all of the major configurations in my stable (P, PJ, reverse PJ, reverse PH, JH, H, HH, hh, S). They each have a place, and I enjoy playing them all. BUT if I could ONLY have ONE bass, it would be a J with 3 band pre that includes a passive mode and a passive tone control and series/parallel switch. I do not have a bass with all of these features, but maybe one day...

I prefer my Jazz Basses over my Precisions. I can hear them better. It's the only real reason. I prefer to record with a Precision, though.
