Between the two, a Jazz. Not a fan of P necks, and I like the J body better. I have a G&L Jazz; it doesn't get as much playing time as my M-2000, but it is in the regular rotation.

I have a LOT of fun playing jazzes and they were my main instrument for twenty years or so, but these days I get more Utility out of my Precision. When I need a 5 I reach for my L2500.
Jazz bass here, neck and the flexibility of having two pickups gives me more tone options, although a P Bass cuts thru most band situations at any gig.
First bass I've owned was a PJ and kept it for a long time, I worn it big time after buying it new as a teenager, then a jazz, then double humbuckers with a pre-gibson Tobias Classic 5. And I kept switching from all those configurations for 15 years until I got 3 different jazzes in a row: 2010 MIA Fender Standard Jazz Bass V (now named Pro version) + Bacchus JB IV + Marin Cano 70's V.
Recently got humbuckers again with an Ibanez EHB 1005 SMS, and baaaam a jazz again with a Sire MM V8 IV. But I'm so content with the Sire that I now plan on getting a... P5R with flats, and a V7 fretless jazz IV

For variety bands, any bass with two pickups, even if its a PJ bass that says 'Precision' on the headstock
I recently tried an experiment of trying to go two gigs just playing a single split P in a variety band situation. For me, it failed. YMMV

My gig set up is old school but not necessarily in either camp:
Boy oh boy, I'm so glad to see a thread here that hasn't been discussed before.
Jazz basses sound scooped with both pups on full. Back either off a little and the mids flood back. I love both P and J.
I prefer p basses for fretted, jazz for fretless. Even if it's not a fender. For example my dingwall has p pickups. P pickups work for the dirtier sounds I like, and I don't normally use dirty tones with fretless. With fretless I also prefer the neck pickup almost all the way off and the bridge pickup wide open so the typical vvt jazz control layout works really good for me for fretless.
Lovely Sadowsky there (I'm a total sucker for natural finishes) but I have to ask about that pedal. That is the largest single pedal I've ever seen. Looks like it would need its own pedal board! What's in there that takes up so much space for a reverb pedal? A spring?
