This is my preference too, I like the sound of the P bass over a traditional Jazz bass but I like having the option to mix in a little bit of bridge as well. Full 50/50 mix between neck and bridge is like a beefier jazz bass. The thin neck is a must for me, but as you can see on the Yamaha 5 string in the middle there sometimes this means it tapers out quite a bit as you go up the neck.
That Ibanez there on the right has been modded since I took this photo, now it's got a hum cancelling bridge pickup (stacked coils) and a well matched neck pickup, no matter where I set the knobs it's dead quiet and sounds great. So that addresses one of the biggest issues many people have with PJs.
