Agree if the bass is wired in parallel, I'll normally back off the neck pickup to like 80%. But if the bass is wired in series I don't feel like the mids suffer as much

This is my preference too, I like the sound of the P bass over a traditional Jazz bass but I like having the option to mix in a little bit of bridge as well. Full 50/50 mix between neck and bridge is like a beefier jazz bass. The thin neck is a must for me, but as you can see on the Yamaha 5 string in the middle there sometimes this means it tapers out quite a bit as you go up the neck.
That Ibanez there on the right has been modded since I took this photo, now it's got a hum cancelling bridge pickup (stacked coils) and a well matched neck pickup, no matter where I set the knobs it's dead quiet and sounds great. So that addresses one of the biggest issues many people have with PJs.
Every time I see a headline like that, I'm reminded of the Blues Brothers movie:
"We got both kinds of music, country and western!"
Jazz bass all the way. P with a jazz neck maybe, prefer shortscales, but even though the older one I tried had a bigger neck I loved the Yamaha BB, and like Yamaha jazz bass inspire basses.
I once met a guy who had never been outside of his hometown. He was happy with that, but as someone who has traveled internationally, I couldn't help pity him for the horizons he would not only never see, he'd never even be aware of.
I feel the same way about the people you mentioned.
All of them lovely, I particularly like the one in the center. I know I've seen these before, nice lightweight PJ basses, but I can't recall the name off the top of my head.

I haven't read all the answers, but I'm assuming a bunch of people have already said "why not both?" (PJ). That's where I'm at
I own both but, for me it depends on the song mostly and what serves it best. 60-70 stuff P works good, 80-90 and today

Generally, Precision, on the basis of sound. I know there is a difference in the ergonomics, but I've never found myself in a place where I notice it.
It's not that I don't ever have a use for the mid scoop comb filtered jazz sound, but my go-to sound on my 3-pickup bass is equivalent to a single coil Precision tone.
J-style is more popular simply due to two pickups. P-style-plus-J is popular, but to my ears, JJ comes closer to P-bass (with neck pickup soloed) than PJ does to the JJ tone.
Me, I prefer P-bass because it doesn't fall over when you lean it against the wall.

Wow .. This is the first time I am hearing this question on TB. I can't decide.
I'd check out a precision Ultra if you get the chance. 1&5/8 width between the two, a modern D shape that's less rounded and thick than the C's usually on P necks, and a compound radius fretboard make it a superbly easy playing p.
