On the contrary, I love the Major Scale because it seems no one plays it anymore!

I was referring to the sheep mentality thats so prevalent here with the whole "pbass/tort/ straight to amp" thing since its so happening for some(kinda like flats)... but since you just had to post pics of some of my favorite bassists...

1. Geezer has played many different brand basses over the years, all over the map actually, even BC Rich at one point
2.Geddy lee as well has switched numerous times, but I'm sure you know this
3.Frank Bello has played ESP basses much longer than Fenders
4.Dave Ellefson played BC Rich and Jackson's most of his career so far
5. Billy Sheehan has been endorsed by Yamaha since at least the early 90's
6.Rob Trujillo has been endorsed by many different brands...


Nothing against fender(that wasn't my point either)as I've owned a few myself, but i think you picked some poor examples there! Off the top of my head, the only renown metal bassist that was "Fender P/amp" is Steve Harris

I've seen dozens of improvising progressive bands, been in a few too...nothing "What The He!!" because this is not new. Maybe by Calling something a jam band you get a ready made market nitch and campouts to play at. Lifestyle issues. I guess you never heard MAGMA?

I was referring to the sheep mentality thats so prevalent here with the whole "pbass/tort/ straight to amp" thing since its so happening for some(kinda like flats)... but since you just had to post pics of some of my favorite bassists...

1. Geezer has played many different brand basses over the years, all over the map actually, even BC Rich at one point
2.Geddy lee as well has switched numerous times, but I'm sure you know this
3.Frank Bello has played ESP basses much longer than Fenders
4.Dave Ellefson played BC Rich and Jackson's most of his career so far
5. Billy Sheehan has been endorsed by Yamaha since at least the early 90's
6.Rob Trujillo has been endorsed by many different brands...


Nothing against fender(that wasn't my point either)as I've owned a few myself, but i think you picked some poor examples there! Off the top of my head, the only renown metal bassist that was "Fender P/amp" is Steve Harris

You realize it's a joke right? The Pbass/tort/flats thing... It's just a big running gag like the best bass for metal threads.

I don't think anyone is serious on this site. Maybe you though. Not sure.

How bout Mars Volta? Massacre? Pain Killer, Pere Ubu? PILL? The Residents? Rhodan? Steel Pole Bathtub? Beefheart? Sonic Youth? how about Sleep? the drone movement... The Red Masque are delightful actually, but they are part of a long tradition. This music used to be part of jazz too, this is like early 70s "out" jazz with rock instruments angular/agressive rhythm rater than Afroamerican.

Miles Davis absolutely was a jam band! Are you familiar with his entire catalogue, especially from the late 60's to mid-70's? His band even opened for the grateful dead!

Ever listen to the albums Agarta, Pangea, On The Corner, Water Babies, Get Up, or any of the numerous live albums from that era?? In my opinion, these are some of the deepest, heaviest jams ever recorded.

I don't blame anyone who doesnt like that era of Miles's music, but he 100% was a jam band. I agree with earlier posters that from Kind of Blue onward, there is a heavy focus on modal improvisation, and it can be called whatever you want... The late 60's-70's are total heavy electric jams with an incredible amount of boundary pushing experimentation.

To get all "dude. Stop." At the notion that Miles fronted a groundbreaking jam band implies that you are unaware of how broad spanning his career was. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that- It takes years to become really familiar with any artist who's career spans 5 decades, but with all due respect, you don't seem to know what you're talking about on this one.

Nobody is saying Miles doesn't jam, but there was no "Jam Band" genre then. That is a term that was invented in the nineties to describe bands like Phish and Widespread Panic.

He is not one the Wiki list of Jam Bands: List of jam bands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , not that there is, or should be, any authority on it... but to many people it is problematic categorizing acts like Miles with bands like Gov't Mule. If every band that ever jammed was a "Jam Band", well then who isn't?
