What actor played a role so iconicly that it's unimaginable anyone else could replace them?

The circular overhead light in the war room scene looks like the blinding bright ring from a nuclear bomb exploding.
43 years and counting, alhough I think is was 1978! Can't decide if that makes it feel better or worse??
Yeah, Grease was released about 45 years ago in '78, but the song Magic was released about 43 years ago in '80.
O. M. G. DeNiro changes personalities, and probably fingerprints and rapid eye movements, when he plays a role. It is conceivable that someone could watch five of his films in a row and be surprised that the leading men were all the same guy.
This man basically did this entire scene without blinking.
And who else could have played Randle McMurphy.

I thought about Jack Nance because he's iconic in that but I held back because I'm unsettled about how much that credit for that should go to Nance or Lynch.
