What actor played a role so iconicly that it's unimaginable anyone else could replace them?

"Purple Rain" is too easy, because it's considered to be somewhat autobiographical, but I also can't imagine anyone but Prince playing Christopher Tracy in "Under the Cherry Moon:"

Hands down, the role that cannot be touched by any other is that of Torgo, as portrayed by John Reynolds, in the cinematic unicorn that is Manos, The Hands Of Fate…

Some might tell you that Plan 9 From Outer Space by Ed Wood is the worst film ever made, but a growing consensus declares otherwise, that this bests Wood’s opus in that department. And Reynold’s performance is singular, in spite of subsequent sequels and prequels; he committed suicide before the movie’s premiere, and there is an urban legend that he was on LSD the entire time of filming…

"What kind of a name is Yossarian?" "It's Yossarian's name, sir."
Actually, I think every single role in that film was iconic.
Major Danby was genius!

Big Arkin fan, especially The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, and Grosse Point Blank.

Now I really want to watch Catch-22, Freebie and The Bean, and Glengarry Glen Ross.

I always enjoy Richard Benjamin in everything I see him in, ever since Westworld, but he's also a lot of fun behind the camera, having directed Tom Hanks comedy The Money Pit, and one of my personal favourite comedies (Mel Brooks autobiographical account of having to babysit Errol Flynn, during his tenure in the Sid Caesar show) My Favourite Year.

Enrico Colantoni as Mathesar in 'Galaxy Quest'. Brilliant film, even to this day.

That movie is PURE entertainment.

I contend that the reason that movie is so fun is because every single role in that movie is PERFECTLY cast.

Just look at this line up:
