Yep, me too. I try and avoid that tone and playing style like the plague. Reminds me of smokey pubs, leather jackets, beer-soaked carpets, ringing ears and hangovers.

John E, and many others have pretty cool bass tone, depending on your personal preference. I must admit Ric Fierabracci has about the best tone ever, IMHO. He seems to be able to get his tone with many different basses. The link below is not studio or a performance of course, just a little demo/promo, but using his standard bass rig (not necessarily his standard bass)
just listen to his tone.....you have to put up with a little talking, but this is the tone...to me at least....
I think that's another Xotic he's using. What a tone!
