What are these alerts and how do I turn them off?

I keep getting alerts where my only option is to mark them read or unread. I have no idea what they are notifying me about and would like to stop receiving such alerts. I unchecked pretty much all of my alert options and I can't see how any of the remaining ones would result in this:

Has anyone else succeeded in eliminating such alerts?

I haven't been able to turn them off either. Maybe they're good for us. Maybe we should conform and get with the corporate program. I'm sure the corporation has our best interests at heart.

go to preferences, then alert preferences and select "custom" a whole slew of other options comes up, its alot of things to uncheck too.

I don't see any way to turn off notifications for posts in threads that I did not create and have not interacted with.

I’d already unchecked virtually all of the custom alert options. I can’t see how the ones I still have checked could relate to the alerts in question.
