Okay, after doing some digging, my "Pocket Manual of Musical Terms" uses the symbol for a diminish triad though "The Jazz Theory Book" uses the symbol for the seventh chord as does the "The New Real Book".

Right. It makes sense when you think about it, since all "legit" nomenclature is meant to be read verbatim, while all jazz nomenclature assumes that interpretational liberties will be taken by each individual player.
