Of the pickups I've tried so far, I like Q-Tuner, Lane Poor, and Bartolini CB. But I'm curious to hear pickups from Delano, Dingwall, Villex, Dark Star, and SGD Lutherie.

what are your favorite pickups

Having virtually tried most of what is out there in terms of pickups, my favorite ones are Villex pickups and Dingwall pickups. Honorable mentions go to Nordstrand and Seymour Duncan Custom Shop

what exactly do q-tuners sound like, i know they look super cool and are about the same price as bartolinis but i've never heard them
There are several threads about them. Search in the "Pickups and Electronics" Forum. They are unique sounding pickups with very extended high end. Opinions vary vastly over tone. I could not get a tone that I liked out of them (after few months of tweaking, plus the string dragging issue that was very apparent to me) so I gave them away. Others swear by them and have found their Holy Grail. YMMV
thanks, im building my own bass and trying to get more low end then anything, so that helps a lot. I was thinking about bartolinis, any suggestions?
If strong fundamental is your aim (along with a full organic tone) then I'd suggest Villex pickups
IMO, Q-Tuners have a relatively flat, extended frequency response, with more high harmonic content (above 4 kHz) than other pickups - the lows are there too, just not accentuated compared to other frequencies. My experience with Bartolinis is that they tend to have a strong, warm, low midrange, but not so much fundamental, as well as somewhat dampened highs, although the CB series is more open sounding.
It's a mix between Bartolini xxM45c quad coils and EMG 40J's. I guess it depends on what sound I'm going for at that particular moment.
Seymour Duncan Basslines Quarterpounders for my Fender P+J and Basslines active soapbar pickups for my Dillon Thunderbird. They both sound killer. Wide range of tones. I will never use EMG's because the service guy was a douchebag

Nordstrands and Seymour Duncan (although I find them to be hit or miss depending on the instrument). For guitar I love Bare Knuckle Pickups (they don't have bass pickups on the site, but they do custom winds all the time... probably gonna order a custom vintage spec'd split p from them for my fretless sometime).
