What are your Funk Pedals?

Lots of envelope filters. My favourites are Mu Tron, Emma Discumbobulator and Chunk Octavius Squeezer/Agent 00Funk, (the names of filter pedals even sound funky!) with perhaps a touch of overdrive (an EHX Bass Soul Food sounds filthy in front of a filter) and sometimes an Octave pedal (Boss OC 2 does the trick). Lastly, my Spacebass also helps me get that little bit extra funky....View attachment 727632

3Leaf Wonderlove, Proton, and You're Doom; ss/bs TAFM (gate engaged); Iron Ether Subterranea. Those are the primary effects I use for the funky stuff, but I'll also add a touch of chorus and/or delay sometimes.

The only change on this my board from this pic is that I took off the reverb and put on an Iron Ether Xero (non-deluxe), because filters, man.

"More old school?" Um, I hate to break it to you, but "P-funk" isn't really a hip new band full of young talent.

I know that. I just think that the kinds of effects in PFunk sound more "modern" compared to that no bullsh*t P-bass thump.

I'm mostly a fan of that 70s instrumental Meters sound so nothing but a P-bass with heavy high tension flats for me.

I did pick up a couple Moogerfoogers (Envelope Filter & Phaser) for the more "P-funk" kind of sound but realized I like that more old school vibe.

I'm just messin' with ya . I know what you mean. Personally, I dig the basic sound as well as the more dressed-up tones. It really depends on the groove and who's playing it.

EDIT: One of the many great things about P-Funk is that they tore it up with and without effects on bass. And with synth bass! No limits!

I only tried the bassballs twice, but I wasn't too impressed either time...maybe id think differently now??!! I'm curious to hear how it'd sound through my current setup!! I really also dug the older huge assed Qtron, bit I sold it about 10 years ago, I've heard so much bad about the newer ones though...

Maybe you'd like. Pedals are always in the eye of the beholder. It doesn't make you a bad bassist if you don't like it. Just dead wrong. And stupid. (No, not really...) It's sort of an acquired taste, as it can be pretty harsh.

I'll say this, too... When I use a fretless and put the Bassballs in front of an overdrive (or a fuzz for a mellower tone), it makes a great lead tone that almost sounds like a distorted pedal steel. Cool ass all heck.

Sounds good. And, like the other guy, I'm yanking your chain. I grew up loving Bootsy, so I take a lot of my sound from him. But I also have a few Prohibition Era songs I play in my set... REALLY old school. Cheers.

Yeah, I'm kinda regretting selling off the microsynth now!! For that particular downsweep synth tone I don't really want much touch response, and the EH did that for me, the Manta is responsive on that setting but not so much on the more traditional up sweep setting (where I actually want it), so right now I run my compressor before it, which doesn't help with the flea tone in trying to get...the funny thing is the SA BEF did that same FX25 tone perfect for me, but wouldn't do the down sweep "funktown" sound to my liking..

To your last paragraph, I've heard guys play funky on upright too!! To me its all about the feel, but I don't want the keyboardist doubling my lines so that's why *I* use FX....

How do you like the Soundblox Filter Pro? I am really thinking about getting one. Very limited number of videos on it and I haven't really seen any videos that focus on Envelope Filter tones, most focus on the more synth style tones and those Dub Step noises.

Also if you watch the basic version of the BEF it has the same sounds. I love my Manta version of it and you can get wahs, phasers, and all kinds of sounds, but it might take a while to get used to it. Hope that helps!

That looks great to me! One thing to keep in mind though is if you buy a Manta you get 7 different distortions built in with it. Not as many as the Bass Distortion Pro though.

Are you suggesting the Wonderlove instead of the Soundblox Pro Envelope Filter? And as far as Octave Pedals, I'm not a huge fan, maybe I just haven't fooled around enough with a good one. I currently have an MXR Bass Octave someone gave to me for free. I don't mess with it much, used it once to fool around with "I Wish It Would Rain" and I was thinking of added a Phaser as well space permitted, which looks like I will have the room for one.

Yeah, I was looking into the Mantra as well, honestly what has me sold on the Soundblox Pro Envelope Filter is the 6 presets. I know with the Mantra you can MIDI it out and get like over 100+ settings. Requires a few extra things in addition to the pedals. I've heard these two used together well to get a variety of your classic Synth Bass tones, that's about the only reason I have the Distortion on here. Again, maybe I haven't fooled around with a good one but I'm not too big on Bass Distortion either but I am a tweaker and love messing with knobs. I had a Way Huge Ringworm Ring Modulator a while back, THAT was a fun pedal to mess with!
