What are your Funk Pedals?

I don't think the Tall Font Russian is a funky pedal. At all.

I mean, you can use it to get a bit of that "Dance to the Music" vibe with the gain and tone dialed back some but I don't think that's what it's bets suited for.

Now I say that as a big fan of the TFR. I think it's a fantastic sounding dirt box but the things that make it such a different/great flavor of Muff are (IMO) the same things that make it not great for funk. Standard Big Muffs have that creamy smoothness to their fuzz tone. The TFR is grittier and much more "in-your-face". Sound wise it is (at least to me) in that range just between distortion and fuzz. Fantastic for rock stuff and also my favorite for jumping from clean to something very nasty.

For funky stuff I prefer a much smoother version of a Muff or a synthier, gated fuzz.

Okay, with the normal caveats that you don't need any pedals to play funk, IF I were to make a board dedicated for doing funk stuff it would probably look like this:

Octaver
Fuzz (maybe a Muff and a gated synthy fuzz)
Envelope Filter (or two. Maybe even blended in parallel with something like a Boss LS-2)
Wah (I like the Dunlop even though the bypass is crappy)
Synth pedal (EHX BMS, Akai DI, and Korg G5 have been some of my favorites)
Compressor
Phaser (I prefer six stagers, especially for funky stuff)
Delay
Preamp/EQ (primarily as a way to switch between a fingerstyle and slap tone)

That's basically how I feel about it, I was just wondering if there was some secret sauce I was missing because you mentioned fuzz and it's the only one pictured on that board. I'm rebuilding my board presently and using a Brown Dog for more genre-appropriate fuzz.

Yeah, when I think of "funky" fuzzes I generally think TAFM, Brown Dog, ZVex Mastotron etc.

I have quite a big board these days but for funk stuff I don't really use effects much. I'll use a phaser sometimes but that's about it. I will use my Bass Station II though hip-hop flavoured stuff or a later-Cameo / '80s R&B type feel.

Got major GAS for a Sub 37 at the moment. Don't know if I can be strong for much longer. :/

I understand your GAS pain about a Sub 37. Those are sweet machines!

Depends really on the style of funk and how much room I have to play around.

A lot of clean sound, but essential effects are MF-101 Lowpass/envelope, MF-102 12-stage phaser, EHX Bass Micro Synth, and sometimes a bit of mild drive, like the BJF BBBOD. Some of the other stuff as well if I'm allowed to go nuts :smug:

My board is unfortunately a bit messed up, my brother borrowed it and returned everything in a bag and all my George L's (I think even only some of them!) in another bag! Didn't get around to redo it all yet, also making a few replacements.
But, this is everything, on and around the board, a Pedaltrain Pro (not including the latest addition, my long awaited Echoczar+Angelbaby I finally got earlier this year):

I don't think there's much noticeable difference. Mine is the older version, but it's the same pedal. I recently found out that my version has become very coveted, not really sure why, but I'm for sure not selling it. That pedal in combination with the MF-102 12-stage... it's endless sonic joy...! :)

...and Guiness20 just reminded me I actually also have a Mad Professor Snow White Auto Bass Wah... forgot all about that one! Must be here somewhere.

Thanks, I've been going through a lot of pedals and had tons of fun, but all these are keepers. Well, maybe with the exception of the Markbass Riverbero, it's really better suited for guitar. I'll see if I can take an updated pic with the new additions soon.

Hey, I had FIVE at one point...! :smug:

Previously owned the MF-103 Ring Mod, the MF-104 delay, and the MF-105 MuRF - all absolutely great pedals. They have endless options for combining internally, and for using expression pedals to control everything. You could even send the MuRF signal in to control the delay rate! That was madness :D
In fact the loop box from Analogman was made for the Moogerfoogers, with one MF in each loop, as they are quite noisy, especially on a daisy chain. I'd then have the EHX BMS in the same loop as the MF-102.
