What Bass Am I?

don't be concerned about fretless 'feel' references - it is a temporary insecurity

I've been playing nearly exclusively fretless EB (and DB too) for 35+ years and you adapt - as an early DB student I have always used the 3 finger left hand technique too

am I the fastest EB player? No, but it has served me well (BTW, there is no crime in looking down either)

Fair enough. Wonder if I could ask you to check that Ibanez Ashula hybrid fretless/fretted and give is your thoughts. Is it just a crutch or does it open interesting harmonic possibilities? Whoever they got to demo that thing is a monster too, makes the thing sound amazing.

*faints*

Wow! If you close your eyes, it sounds like a double bass with a crappy pickup and no mic, but a double bass it does sound! Good ear! Those pull-offs with the left hand really sell it. Tom Warington is a monster! His secret power was his sweet mustache. I'm growing mine. It's called the Warington bass face.
He's my professor next year! :hyper:

I'm polite, perhaps passive. I won't growl for you unless you touch me in all the right places. I'll mimic a double bass nicely with a bridge mute. I also play Jaco Pastorius licks automatically and will make you look sexy.

What bass am I?
If I don't read the later words after the question, and if I don't know what kind of forum it is, (except for the make someone look sexy part) I'd answer:
My 'carefully programmed sampled bass sounds triggered by my MIDI controller".

But I know it's not the answer You wish You have, so I'm sorry if I'm OT.

Will be annoying sales people all week in the Seattle area and will keep my eye out no doubt.
Yeah watch the big box stores as Xmas gets here they'll get em for sure my local GC got one and I tried it. in passive mode the n3 pups were hotter than any of my active or humbucker basses and then the active preamp was unbelievable! The neck was pristine and it was a comfortable weight. Killer finish on it this particular one was sunburst with a tort pg. I just wished I had the money

It's against the rules to have to look at the finger board especially when your time could be better spent winking at the groupies. That's like bass player 101 stuff mang.
Don't let your pride get in the way of making good music. Remind yourself that the only people who would fault you for occasionally looking at your fretboard are judgmental tools whose opinion shouldn't matter to you.

*bobs head to the beat*

It's infectious and really drives the point home how the bass can really influence the groove, hell, it IS the groove. Drums are just ornamentation. High hat here, cymbal splash there, like sprinkles on the cake that is the bass line. ;-)

I played with a band that covered this song, no joke. lol

Boy oh boy, I can remember when this was all over the airwaves. I was 15 going on 16 !

Victoria University, NZ. Don't worry, you'll get him back eventually ;)

Haha he went kiwi. Cheers mate! Please return him unharmed. I hear you have a horrible orc immigration issue in N.Z. But seriously can't blame him, hear the standard of living in NZ is winsauce in a bottle.

Send him to UVic (Vancouver Island, BC, Canada) next...

That works for me too! Seattles only three hours from BC.

NeedGigs! Tell him if he moves to Victoria, B.C. in Canadialand he'd have TWO dedicated students and all the Canadian bacon and maple syrup he can eat.

You're right of course, I was being pretty cheeky there anyway. We all know groupies don't go for bass players, was an obvious joke.

Remember what happened to this poor gal?

Groupie Accidentally Sleeps With Bass Player

LOUISVILLE, KY – The day after The Academy Is concert, Victoria Jorgensen, 22, was terrified to realize that she had accidentally slept with the band’s bass player – mistaking him for someone important in the band.
“I can’t believe how stupid I was,” said Jorgensen. “I mean, I went up to the guy and was like ‘are you in the band’ and he was all like, ‘yeah, I’m in the band’ so I did him. Then this morning I was telling my friends and I realized he was just the bass player. This happens to me all the time.”
Jorgensen plans to do more research before sleeping with another band member.
“This won’t happen again,” said Jorgensen. “If I’m going to sleep with someone, they’d better be important. I mean, I could find someone here in town as important as a bass player.”
Adam Siska, The Academy Is bass player, was unavailable for comment.

I play double bass and when i got my fretless it only took a few days of playing to get the hang of it. You'll be surprised at how quickly you'll get used to it. I occasionally have to look when i get up past the 9th or 10th fret but not much other than that. Get a fretless, man. You'll love it.

Not a bad idea at all! Like a sticker or something. I've seen student double basses with actual knife marks on the back of the neck to give beginners some kind of reference out of first position. I never considered something temporary like a sticker. Cheers!
I think one of the best markers are those little stickers for reinforcing holes in paper. If you stack 2 or 3 of them up and put a little masking tape over them, just set your thumb in the hole. That's what I used when I first started playing double bass.

Cheers bruddah! Good idea with those circular stickers. Bet you really feel those easily.

And yea, been listening to some fretless electric guys all night and decided I want to mwah too. My double bass will mwah sometimes if I fiddle with my adjustables but I think the fingerboard needs planning because it's inconsistent.

Indeed it was obvious :). I replied to it because I noted that you had made several mentions of not wanting to look at your fretboard -- seemed like it was a big deal to you.

I just emphasized that part to get the "winking at groupies" joke in there. But ya, no shame to check up on positioning visually no doubt. I seem to be reading a lot lately and always have my face buried in the stand. Heh
