What bass under 2k would u get for slap?

Jazz bass, best slap bass I ever heard.

+1 There simply isn't a better or least tiresome slap tone overall. For me the Stingray for slap is as dead as disco, and I mostly see the 'Ray among rockers for that great ballsy fingerstyle low end.

Ironic too since the Stingray was ostensibly built for slapping. but how ironic that (afaik) it is still MASSIVELY outmatched by the J bass in those genres where slapping is most commonly heard.

There's lots of active dual buckers that sound great too, but the J (and clones) just outshines them all.

I play mainly Spector Basses these days, and while they are great basses for slap , the King of all slap basses is an EBMM Stingray. My Spectors are much more versatile basses - I can play 4 sets of diverse covers on a single Spector. The Stingray is not nearly as versatile or smooth-sounding, but as far as slapping goes, nothing can touch it. A Spector Euro 4LX (left & right basses pictured in the trio) or EBMM Stingray can be found new for just under $2k, and for well under $2k when shopping used.

For pure slap, I would get a Stingray. Preferably single-humbucker. Preferably maple board & ash body.

A Bongo single bucker, Fender Jazz (maple board, ash body) and a Carvin SB (also maple board, ash body) would all be excellent choices as well.

IMO 3 basses that come to mind that are some of the best slappers:

1. Fender Jazz or similar J type Bass.
Universally recognized, industry standard slap tone. Very versatile bass as well. Sits in the mix great. Very musical.
I would suggest light weight swamp ash body/maple FB, true single coil passive pickups (not hum cancelling) for slap, although alder body with other fingerboarda ie brazilian rw can be great also. Also a good value...Nordy, Mike Lull

2. MM stingray
Universally recognized tone as well, very distinct sound. More of a one trick pony IMO but does it very well. I would go ash/maple again.

3. Spector NS2
Great slapping basses with distinct "spector sound" heard on many records ie Chili Peppers Mothers Milk etc. Super fast to play and more versatile than a stingray. P J pickups at equal volume make for a slightly thicker tone than a JJ. Also a great rock bass. I would find an older one with a maple body neck through construction....

If these basses are out of your price range just remember sometimes its better to save up a bit longer to get something that you might be happier in the end with, is built better and an instrument you could keep for life!

A friend of mine just got himself a real cheap 2nd hand Japanese P bass.
i really like the slap sound on that one as it has a very nice body to it and would most probably get one of those at the moment.

Im in love with my 55-02 for slapping. Actually, i love it all around for my range of styles. I play in a dance/hip hop/funk wedding band and this thing covers all the basses.

No pun intended.

I think the fish is still the best suggestion here.

Yep. Own both. Love both. Can't go wrong with either. They are both serious slap machines.

But they do sound different that's for sure. To me, the Stingray sound is more "funk" when slapped. Whereas the Jazz has more of that classic Fender tone. Bit thicker, and a bit more scooped when using both pickups.

Ive found that IMO the Music Man Stingray HH has some really sick slap tones and like 4 of them too. i say the HH though because IMO a bridge pup doesn't work very well for slap.
