Mrs F snuck one of these into the grocery basket this afternoon for me to taste. Which is awesome.

Unfortunately, the beer isn't. The sugar is so high that it drowns out all the interesting elements of the taste.

Im really not into Barleywine style ales, myself. I have tried Griffens Bow, and it was a bit better than other Barleywines Ive had.

Most likely wasn't conditioned long enough. Barleywines should sit in the bottle for 6 moths - 1 year+ to reach their potential/tame down excess sugars. If you haven't already, try the Anchor Old Foghorn Barleywine, that's an excellent brew!

At the risk of being off-topic, I thought I'd let you all know about the Emerald Coast Beer Festival in Pensacola, Florida September 7 & 8. It's a good time, lots of craft, rare, and homebrewed beer. Friday evening's tasting is open to everyone, and it's a large affair. If you are interested in the Saturday events, PM me and I'll tell you about them. It's intended to be a "homebrewers only" beach party, but I'll give you the 411 on it.

I've brewed a Schwarzbier and a Kölsch, and my wife brewed a Honey-Orange Wheat with coriander and Chamomile. We'll be with the LA Lagers homebrew club from Mobile, Alabama.

Enjoyed Dale's Pale Ale all weekend. Picked up an Avery "Kaiser" imperial octoberfest for later.

I brewed a big Oktoberfest a couple of years ago, 27 lbs of grain in a 10 gallon batch (that's a lot). I'm not sure it crossed the line into the realm of imperial territory, but it was sure tasty! I brewed it in March and lagered it until September. I've got to brew that on again!

Blew my mind last night. Was trying to get rid of some Shipyard Export last night that I got in a combo pack. It wasn't bad beer, just unremarkable. Had it with a Costco sausage pizza. It paired perfectly and tasted great with the pizza.

That's the way to go!

My LHBS has cases of Sierra Bigfoot from 2008-2012 (one more year and they'll have linear 6 packs :p)

I bet the '08 is insanely good at this point.

I've been tempted to buy a few 6ers each year and wait 4-5 before tasting.

I've had that happen with some beers before, they taste either awful or completely average until you have them with food. It can be weird sometimes.

Do it. The local pub here does barleywine February every year, and this year they had 5 different aged barleywines. The 2008 Alaskan Barleywine was absolutely incredible, but the 2008 Bigfoot they had on tap was beautiful, too.

A friend in our beer tasting group has assembled this:

That is going to be one long tasting.

Yup. I was just drinking it to get rid of it. Very pleasant surprise! I might have to keep a 6er of it on hand for zesty pizza. :hyper:

yeah, I remember having some waterloo dark lager in the house, I remembered liking it when I had it the last time, but for some reason it didn't do anything for me this time. Then, I came home from work, nuked up a leftover angus burger, and fries, and made a small salad. Figured I would have a bottle with the meal, and I have no idea how it works, but it was heaven. Since then, I've been quick to pair it with anything, whenever I have it around (not often, but still).

I think it might be compared to a bass line, if the EQ is set for playing in a band, it'll probably sound boring on it's own, but when it sits in the mix you'll understand why you EQ'd it like that.

Very good comparison. I'll try to get some next time I see it. With a case of pale ale, case of IPA, and 2 cases of saison, I probably don't need to buy anything soon.
