It's an Ovation Magnum, they were made in the late 70s/early 80s. Very unpopular. They had two versions, one with stereo outs like a Ric, and one with a graphic EQ.

I used to have the solidbody 6 string counterpart, it was called the "breadwinner" all black, composite body shaped like a shark fin. I remember seeing David Cassidy play a white one in a Partridge Family episode. Cool!

Actually, I found the Ovation Magnums especially the Model 1 & 2, to be very well made good sounding basses with loads of tone. No, they're not pretty nor were they popular but they were a great workhorse bass and some consider them to be collectible.

It's different, I'll give it that much. I've never seen or played one.

A guitarist I played with has an Ovation Breadwinner. It's mahogany with a white finish. Nice (and surprisingly comfortable) guitar.

That body is the Magnum I and II body. The III and IV are more conventional.

If you search this forum for "ovation magnum", you'll see loads of posts where people think the Magnum was/is an awesome pro bass, and loads of people saying "what is that ugly thing".
