What cheaper model basses will fit in fender precision hardshell case?

Kind of an odd question, but here it goes: Im looking to buy a cheap bass that is essentially a Fender P knockoff, or around $300-400, so I can travel with it and not worry if it gets damaged or stolen. I have two hardshell cases for my US P’s.

Any recommendations for models that will fit that profile?

Harley Benton. If you’re looking to fly I’d get a better hard shell case than the ones from Fender. It will get totaled on the first trip.

You're gonna need an SKB or Gator case that is rated for withstanding airline baggage handlers. Upside is if you want to travel with something more valuable, you'll already have a capable case on-hand. On the bass, Harley Benton or for a bit more than your budget you could grab a Sire. Many folks feel the Sires are quite competitive with Fender's offerings, might fall in love

Or troll your local classifieds for a used Squier.

Keep a lookout for any older SX P’s/PJ’s, solid stuff often surpassing Squier. If it matters to you, there are different eras of headstock shapes, and a time when it came real close to Fender(before they complained). Then, some necks are gloss, some satin or bare. There was even a more budget line, Douglas.

I feel like you'd be a bigger target for theft if a thief thought there was a Fender in there.

It reminds me of a pizza box case for laptops that I saw somewhere around Y2K. Well - the opposite, really. The idea was to make it look like you were carrying something inexpensive. But I suspect a student would be more likely to swipe a pizza than an expensive laptop.

Anyway, if the brand name is present, consider putting a sticker or some tape over it to make it less appealing to a would be thief.

A Fender hardcase is oversized and you're going to be hit with an oversized luggage charge of about $200 with Southwest and similar for others. Fly both directions and you spent as much as the cheap bass that's in the case.

EDIT: I double checked their site and there is a clause that musical instruments have that fee waived up to 150" overall, l + w + h. So, check your airline's guidelines.

The Fender hardshell cases from the early 90's were decent. Maybe they've cheaped them up since then?

I haven't seen a case that the airlines could not destroy, given half a chance. You are just making it more challenging, no doubt more fun, to trash your stuff. And if they can't do it, I'll bet TSA will be up to the challenge? Inspector with chain saw and hockey mask is waiting for you!

Luna Tattoo 34 if you want something different. It's P shaped, inexpensive, lightweight. The laser etching isn't for everyone though.

I wonder if there is any data on how accurate that is? Like, *are* thieves really more likely to target boxes or cases with an expensive brand name on them?

I’ve heard similar stories from bicycle enthusiasts: lots of folks recommend shipping a bicycle in the box from a flat panel television set… the theory being, flat panel TVs these days are cheap as crap, whereas decent road or mountain bike bikes can cost many thousands of dollars.

But I just have to wonder, are the thieves who are targeting bicycles, or musical instruments, really paying attention to the logo on the box/case? Or are they simply paying attention to the easiest opportunity, whatever box/case is available to grab?

If they are like the young people at my gym, nobody would know what a "Fender" was. Nobody recognizes the brand on my tee shirt. Someone may steal the case because they think it contains car parts?

I bought a Squier P for $50 bucks, and a Squier J 5 for $125 both on the local craigs.

The J 5 turned out to be a really good bass.
