Took it to a shop to get it setup and the guy ****ed up the pickup positioning, still got to get it sorted - until then though it was probably the best bass I had...

it's in the closet right over there. since i injured my shoulder, i can't play long scale basses, but i love that bass and if my shoulder improves, i'll be playing it again.

Although not the first one I played, my first bass (1984) was a Rickenbacker 4001 copy (blank headstock), not that bad after all.
I traded it -plus a certain amount of cash- for an old, worn out, beat up, "real" 4001, that had been almost destroyed by its previous owner: I was young and silly, and the real one didn't sound so better than the fake one. I sold it after a while to get a "modern" Ibanez RB850 (still in my arsenal, still great).
I wish I still had that false Rickenbacker, just for souvenir.
(BTW, sometimes I wish I had a real 4001 now, but this would mean spending a lot of money for something that's definitely not my kind of bass - although really good)

I had a peavey millennium 4 bxp and traded it for the jazz bass that was my number one for the following 6 years.
I sold my first bass (1991-ish Peavey Foundation S active) to a co-worker a couple of years ago. It wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done.
I had a hondo as my first bass. I thought I warped the neck (because I didn't play it at all turns out it needed truss rod adjustment) so I put the neck of my first guitar on it, swapped out the bridge and turned it into a guitar. I still have pieces of it somewhere. I actually learned how to slap and pop on that piece of junk. About 5 years later I switched from guitar to bass as a main and picked up an ibanez that served me well for a couple of years.
Just before moving to the USA in 1966 to go to college I saw an ad for the original Hofner Beatle Bass for $400 in St Louis. They were $80 in Heidelberg, so I bought all I could afford and sold them a week later in St Louis for $200 each. That helped finance my first year in the states. Never played a one of them. I didn't begin playing bass until a year later, and at that point I purchased a new Fender P.
My mother traded it in for a Gibson Les Paul when I was 14. It was a surprise. I just wish I still had the Gibson
I started switching from guitar to bass over thirty years ago. The first few basses I played were borrowed ones. A beautiful old jazz bass and then beautiful old precision, both sunburst. Both of the owners would have let me continue borrowing, but when I went over to bass exclusively I wanted to have my own, so I bought a black Peavey Fury which I modified by replacing the pickup with an EMG jazz. I still have the Fury but it has been changed into a fretless. Here it is about 20 years ago backing up Willie Nelson.
I bought a 1968 Fender Mustang for $60 bucks in 1970. Red w/white racing stripe. One month later, I traded it for a mini bike. 
My first bass was an white Stratossonic bass by Giannini, native brazilian brand of 70s.
When i did buy, it comes with black strings on it. I did sell it without reason....my first mistake in life i think.

My first bass was a Vantage something or another. I think it was set up like a P. It weighed about a zillion pounds, balanced like a one legged drunk, and was all around awkward. Gave it to my brother. What happened after that is something he knows, but I don't. It should have been used as a boat anchor, since I'm pretty sure it wouldn't float.
I played borrowed basses initially (1966-68). The first bass I actually owned was a 1968 Gibson EB0 (totally awful p.o.s) which I sold as soon as I could find (and afford a Fender Jazz).
That 1973 Fender Jazz (Black with white pickguard) took me through HS and college and got defretted along the way (tip - defretting a blocked and bound maple Jazz neck is not the best idea
) I sold it in the early 80's and bought a pair of 1983/84 Ibanez Musician series basses, one fretted (still have it) and one fretless (sold it too, wish I hadn't).

) I sold it in the early 80's and bought a pair of 1983/84 Ibanez Musician series basses, one fretted (still have it) and one fretless (sold it too, wish I hadn't).It was a Steinburg , I gave it to my step brother and bought a '56 Fender Duo-sonic guitar and learned ever nirvana song there was!! , then went back to bass a few years later.
I had a crap "Montaya" P-bass clone back in the 80s as my first bass. I think I destroyed it at a gig for show... but to be honest I don't really remember. Lots of memories are kind of fuzzy from that era, for some reason.

I cut the wings from it to make it look like a toilet seat ( probably why I now love my Bongo ) and threw away the strap. Put a hook on the back of the body and hung it from my belt when playing. Nicely balanced but crap bass. No idea where I stashed it when I purchased my Precision but I never missed it. We had outside dunnies at the time so maybe Dad cut off the neck and used it for it's true purpose when I left home.

It's the red Hohner B2a down in the right bottom corner. Im never going to mod it, or anything. Im going to keep it until the day I die. I love it. I used it from 6th-8th grade band. Im not planning to gig it anymore its had enough love the past 3 years from the terrors of middle school. It shall just stay at my house.

For me it was a Squier Affinity Jazz Bass (metallic blue). Since then, I've acquired a Squier VM Fretless Jazz bass (incredible, for the price at least) and a Schecter Stilleto Extreme-4 (red), which I'm in love with.
Recently, I've played my first Jazz bass for the first time in months and I've almost forgotten how fun it is to play- even if it's a bit on the heavy side.
