What did you learn today?

TIL that were being spied on a lot more than I thought.

The other day at work my coworker mentions these coffee mugs she ordered from QVC for her family for Christmas. I was not the least bit interested but she's one of those people who ramble on and on about her stuff like it's the best stuff ever. Didn't think another thing of it, although later that day at home I jokingly told my wife about these ' amazing' mugs, as she knows this woman and how she is.

Two days later I wake up and on my Amazon page is their usual stuff... With 'recommendations based on your search history'. Lo and behold, the identical set of mugs that lady ordered is right there front and center. I NEVER looked them up nor anything even remotely related to coffee mugs, but here they are, on my personal page. I don't own an Alexa or use siri or any of those listening gadgets, but evidently something is listening...!

Yep. Before Snowden and before Wikileaks, there was a special segment on Good Morning America featuring some random guy from the NSA. He discussed SO much data collection going on, even more than 10 years ago (before smartphones became ubiquitous). They collect everything, and just squirrel it away. By the guy's admission, they have no idea what to do with all of this (though, that's probably changed in the 10 years since I saw that segment). Amazon et. al. have simply monetized their data collection.

TIL i have a not so small herd of whitetail deer on my place. I’m sure they are using my hill as a base camp to feast on my new neighbor’s bigass yard that’s been planted with winter rye. Surprising because i also have a big bobcat that visits on the regular to feast on a ground squirrel village just up the hill from my house. I ran across the deer trail early this morning and followed it back to their bed which is in a big stand of wild privet. It was empty but obviously being used and it’s on the opposite side of my place from where my rodent control worker enters and exits the same patch of hill where the deer are bedding down. I’m not sure how long this arrangement will last as the bobcat will not hesitate to raid the deer bed for a fawn and there has to be enough evidence of the bobcat up there that it wouldn’t be missed by the deer. Maybe the bobcat has quit coming as it has been a minute since i’ve head her up there at night collecting a chipmunk dinner, but it’s been part of her regular foraging circuit for over a year now. The trail i found today is heavy so there are a goodly number of deer coming and going, including a big buck.
Time will tell, and i’ll be watching.

Pound for pound Bobcats are about as mean as they come. But they're also pretty smart. No way they would prance into a bed of more than a half dozen deer and have a go at a fawn....especially if there are several racks of antlers around.

Now, if that fawn wanders off, even a little.....

I've seen a "medium" sized deer with an average 6 point rack fend off 7 wild dogs.

I wouldn’t be too sure, I sat in a tree stand one day and watched a herd of whitetail come out of the woods into a rye patch. As usual the does and fawns came out first and started to graze. About five minutes later the buck came out of the woods but didn’t venture out into the rye patch. Maybe a minute later a good sized bobcat burst out of the woods and took down the nearest doe. the other deer, including the buck were gone before the cat and doe hit the ground good.
