What did you learn today?

Today I learned that the average payout from the tooth fairy per tooth is- allegedly- 5 to 10 bucks! What??? When I was a kid it was a quarter! This was back in the day of the penny gumball machine, though.
Let's assume that you were putting teeth under your pillow in 1970. And let's assume that you live in the US. Ignoring a multitude of other effects, your $0.25 in 1970 then is worth $1.63 today. So yeah the value of teeth has expanded. Maybe baby teeth are in short supply?

Oh, I get you, but the price per tooth I was quoted far outstrips inflation. It could be, as you say, that baby teeth are in shorter supply and higher demand by the tooth fairy. Now, if it's simply that the tooth market as whole is in a serious upswing, all my teeth could possibly be worth a new Squier Affinity P Bass!

It is also possible that we are in a baby tooth bubble and the values will come crashing down at some point.

I think I got a dime. I also used to get a dime as a weekly allowance in exchange for emptying the wastebaskets. In fairness, a dime went a long way in the early 60s and the opportunity to spend it was reliant on my mother taking me to the store, so...

Etna's at it again — Etna volcano update: Eruption update - continuing earthquake swarm
Bad weather has mostly prevented clear sights of the new flank eruption today, but it seems that while it is still going on, lava emission from the new fissure vent high in the Valle del Bove that opened yesterday has decreased.

The area remains obscured in clouds, but thermal cameras show continuing activity from the Bocca Nuova crater.

Seismic activity remains elevated, showing that the eruption is certainly not over and still evolving: the recent earthquake swarm continues (albeit at decreased intensity) with approx. 20 earthquakes with magnitudes between 2 and 3.4 having been detected during the past 24 hours. Most quakes were at shallow depth in the SE sector of the volcano. …

Despite being a geography buff my entire life, I just recently learned the difference between Great Britain, the British Isles, and the United Kingdom. All these years I thought they were basically interchangeable terms.

No shame in that. A lot of people living there seem to think the same...especially the idiots who write in their newspapers.

You must be married.
My thoughts exactly.

Here's food food for thought... if you express an opinion and your wife is not around....are you still wrong?
Of course you are.
