I test drove a 2012 and 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I learned that the V6 models make a lot of noise when you nail the throttle to the floor. the V8 models are actually quieter under acceleration. The sound track from the V6 under full throttle sounds like it's taken from a chase movie.
Mazda reduced the amount of engine damping to make the engine louder (ie. seem faster) during their zoom-zoom commercial era.

I’m guessing Jeep did a similar thing with their V6.

My old Dodge Intrepid had a resonator built onto the air intake for that very purpose. It also had a resonator on the exhaust line, separate from the cat and the muffler, to give it a little more throaty sound. If you took them off, you'd get a little smoother airflow, which would theoretically improve MPG's and HP (if nothing but marginally), but you'd run the risk of sounding like a weed wacker.
