Today I learned that I need a bit more emotional support in my life, and I have no idea how to get it. I don't mean therapy, although that might not hurt at some point. But I realized that in spite of my efforts to have healthy and reciprocal friendships with people, I've mostly not succeeded. When was the last time someone hugged me, or I hugged someone? When was the last time I laughed with someone, or cried with someone? And although I've done what I can to feed my soul in various ways, these have been mostly individual pursuits, or one-offs with no possibility of continuing relationship.

Maybe my expectations are out of line. Maybe single people in their 40s just don't have close friends. Maybe they drink a lot and have sex with strangers they find on CL. In spite of being an active participant in my church, serving on a civic commission, getting exercise, being friendly to my neighbors, inviting people over for dinner or coffee, I'm feeling kinda... lonely. Is this just how it is? Do I just get used to it?

KICK kicked in thirty years ago, after a very shaky start.

According to the band's manager, Chris Murphy, he had a nailbiting encounter with Atlantic Records president Doug Morris when he first took the album to New York.

"He put his feet up on the desk and closed his eyes from the minute the record went on to the minute it finished," Murphy recalls in the sleeve notes for a new, deluxe edition of the record.

"When it stopped, he said, 'I'll give you a million dollars to go and record another album'."
