Flutophone, then trumpet, baritone horn, guitar, electric bass, then upright, in that order. Started on electric bass in 1967, upright during the erly 2000's.

78’ Rickenbacker 4001, $450 with HSC, and every penny I had at 17 working part time jobs. I wanted to BE Chris Squire, but couldn’t use a pick to save my life. Try playing Roundabout with your fingers! My first bass teacher was an upright player who loathed electric, insisted I use Upright fingering, which is ridiculous on an electric. Got about 1/3 into Simandels New Method before I bailed. I love the sound of upright, but no particular interest in playing one.
I began playing bass in HS, on an upright.
What about you?
Would love to hear the stories.
