What do different capacitors do?

Components are either in series or shunt position. Don't know which of those "parallel" is supposed to be.
A series capacitor acts as a high pass filter (blocks low frequencies).
A shunt capacitor acts as a low pass filter (bleeds off high frequencies).

The capacitor is parallel to the signal path. One plate to hot and one plate to ground.

That is called shunt. In a normal schematic, where signal flows from left (input) to right (output), series components are horizontal, while shunt components are vertical. The latter often connect to ground.

Multiple components - all shunt or all series - can be in parallel to each other, as can multiple transformer windings.

Hi there...this is one great thread indeed...

So, I´m about to start the assembly of my 1rst and totally homemade bass..out of a good chunck of mahogany...I have the pickups at home already....

DIMARZIO WillPower Mudbucker (neck) and Dimarzio DP122 for the sweet spot....each pickup will have a tone and volume knob for each one.

1. Do you guys have any suggestions on what capacitors should I use.....
2. Do I need a cap for each tone knob?

....I´m looking for a ballsy sound out of the bass (I use fuzz, overdrive and distortion a 100% of the time)....and I really love the DP122 sound...(I replaced the stock pups on a Squier bass with beautiful results, but I´ve never messed before with caps)...

Any suggestions will be highly appreciatted.

Meh, I've seen better threads.

1. Capacitors are personal preference. Experiment and find what value works best.
2. Unless you intend to switch the tone controls, like a Strat, you will need one capacitor per tone pot.
