Well, my quick 2 cents...
When I first started playing through my PC, I just used a mono 1/4" to 1/8" adapter from Radio Shack into the PC line in or mic jack. I upgraded to a Line 6 Guitar port GX which includes software for like $49. I also bought some quality headphones because my PC speakers were not the greatest and they distorted even at low volume.
