What do you guys think about this Ebay listing.

The feedback looks good, but the pictures stink. If he wants to sell this bass for vintage money, he needs to pull the neck, document the signature or stamp there, pull the pickguard and take extreme close-ups that show the pot dates and wiring, and otherwise document that this instrument is in original condition. If he wants the money, he needs to put in the work - and you won't be the only one asking for a lot more pictures.

Based on his feeback it's probably the real deal, and such situations do occur - but he needs to show you enough to prove it.

My experiences are that the 70s fenders are really hit or miss. To buy one without playing it first, especially for that much money, is really risky. Buy one of those smoking fine new 08 American standards. You could buy 2 of them a 4 string and a 5 for the same money.

The auction says: He only opened it every 6 months to tune and polish.

Who would actually do that? For 30 years? Gosh, what if he missed it in 1993? What then???? :rollno:

The whole story seems odd.

Why would it need polishing every six months if it's just sitting in it's case and not being played.

Now if he adjusted the relief in the neck every six months that would be a good thing and it would also make a lot more sense.

If it's an original 70's bass, left in the case and 100% original, then I don't think he's totally crazy on price. Yes, it's more than sanity will bear, but people who really want those will pay that kind of money.

I'm not convinced that you can't buy every bit as good a bass out of current production or used if you shop around. There's nothing magic about the 60's and 70's Fenders. There are good ones and not so good ones....although I'm not super picky anyway.

Wow, seeing that bass is an ill reminder of just how stupid I was about 14 years ago. I picked one of those up for about 75bucks out of a pawn shop in beautiful condition and loaned it to this guy who was going to be our bass player and it turned out he was a thief instead. Never saw that bass again:scowl:

Thanks guys, I knew I could count on you for some constructive feedback. I think the seller is legit as the high rating would support but the price is steep and the pictures could be better. If anyone else is interested in it I did ask them a question and did get a pretty quick reply. I asked for a picture of the back which they did send to me. I think I'll keep on my quest for a 62' reissue as I seem to hear better things about these anyway.
I am interested in the new Precision V but the local Guitar Center has not gotten any in yet and when I called Thursday the guy said they have none on order either. :rollno:
I've just been a little nervous because the posts I'm reading on the new fiver seem to be either totally for or against and the quality from one to the next seems iffy too.
Well the hunt continues.
Cheers,

HI

Weight, playability and all the jazz is only important if you are buying it to play. If you are buying to invest, a whole different story. Ive bought many vintage Fenders over the years. Pretty much all were not up to what I would consider "gig worthy". That being said, I made bank on every one of them. The key for investing is if the bass is all original. This one looks like the real deal. If its worth the $2700 is up to your judgement. 10 years from now you'll wish you bought it if you have the cash right now and dont. LOL.
