O.K, so i posted a thread about this a while back, and now im serious. I have 300 dollars to spend on a bass guitar. I am going to look on the used market and the new market. I want to try out one more bass before i make a choice, and that bass is the eiphone thunderbird. I have played the Shecter Stilletto-4 and the Omen-5, and loved them both. What is a good brand of bass? What is your favorite? Also, i saw on craigslist and found an abilene bass for $50. Is abilene a beginner brand? Sorry for this being so long, and thanks in advnace for all who help out. ill post back on sunday if i got anything and what i got. :help: :bassist:

An almost pristine SB can be found for 700 to 800, with a active pickups or not, depending. I wouldn't sell my SB5000 for twice what I paid but Carvin's can only be purchased from Carvin, so most are custom, thus, if someone is selling theirs, typically the price will be very reduced.

I would absolutly love to save more to get a better used bass, but i am sick of being made fun of with my muscian friends  for playing a silvertone beginner bass (the kind you get off amazon for 180 bucks). So naturally, i am in a hurry. They are all playing on peavys, B.C. Rich, and ESP LTD guitars and basses. Plus, my silvertone cant do a good drop tuning (past d).

That's usually a new string gauge and a setup. If you're using the standard .45-.105's I wouldn't expect to go any lower than D standard without getting floppy.

In any case, I understand that you want something new. I would go to a store and look at everything in that price range. You can get a new Squier VM, a Squier CV, a used MIM Fender, Epiphones, etc. I'd go for a Squier personally, but they don't resemble anything that you posted in the OP. It's tough to go wrong with a P though...

Yeah, usually these sound like meh, but when these guys have been playing for 8 yeahrs and can be Eddie Van Halen playing eruption and to top it all off, learn it all by ear(this guy uses the B.C. standard. but he dosent make fun of my bass)

A Squier CV 50's or 60's PBass, a Matt Freeman PBass, or a CV 60's Jazz sells through MF at $379. Wait for a 15% discount offer and it costs you $322 shipped. If you look around you may find a few used ones (very few actually) for $250-$275 in excellent condition.

I've played a dozen or more different brands of basses in over 35 years of playing and in the $300 price range any of these is a bargain. They will also tend to hold their value better than some other brands because they're as popular as they are. Good hunting!

Squiers are nice. But sadly the same guys who make fun of the Silvertone will make fun of a Squier. On the other hand, the majority of folks here wouldn't think too highly of ESP. The upshot is to find something you like, play well, don't worry what other people think of your ride, relax and enjoy.
(I got a G&L Tribute SB-2 in your price range and it is a FINE instrument. I got it from the classified ads here. There are a bunch of great basses for sale here all the time. Find a TB'er with a good reputation who is selling something you like and take the plunge.)
BTW, I almost bought an OUTSTANDING ESP here for $350, but I waited too long. I don't really regret not getting it, but it was a beautiful bass.
