this is me A mix of feeling, fingers and theory I rarely look at my fingers in fact I try to rehearse with my eyes closed sometimes because there a lot of gigs in dark rooms with sunglasses so the led lights look cool and the lasers don't burn out my retinas

It varied throughout the years. 12-18 years old I though about girls, then the ladies, and a little later women. Someplace in the late 80's and marriage I thought about the coin, the fun, the gear and snowmobiling. Right about now it is I need a nap.

Some sets I play are so ingrained in my muscle memory, I often find my mind wandering. I enjoy scanning the crowd for silliness, thinking about gear I want, etc.

That being said, my mind is on the music during most sets, typically preparing myself for difficult passages I know are coming up.

Thinking is for private practice time. A little gets done at band rehearsals, but not much if you've done the work in your private practice time. Performance time is all muscle memory and scanning for cues from other musicians, the audience, etc. If you're thinkin', you're stinkin'.

Heck I play bass BECAUSE I'm not thinking about anything when I play. Not always, but the times that count.

I'm not really thinking on a conscious level. I'm more in a flow state most times. The only time the analytical brain comes to the fore is if I sense something is going sideways and I need to decide how best I can play to help fix it.
