I have a tendency to overdress on purpose. For instance my guitarist was wearing a georgia bulldogs shirt and cargo shorts (also with a georgia logo) at the gig where this was taken.

My profile picture though I dressed as a hipster who wanted to be a biker/metal head and it turned out that the other bands hired to play with us weren't bands but southern gospel quartets who were all prim and proper. I swear the looks on their faces when they saw how I was dressed. Awesome.

What do you guys wear on gigs? I'm looking into wearing sports jerseys since they're comfortable, but what kind of things do you guys wear?

I mostly play nice clubs and pubs not dive type bars so we tend to dress professional. I like nice jeans, (dark or black) dress shirt, vest or jacket and a cabbie or pork pie type hat.

My main group is a steampunk band so costuming is a bit unconventional. Outside of that, I typically wear jeans, a t-shirt, and my chucks.

Universal band uniform, only with a bit of a twist. Black cotton trousers, black leather shoes, shiny black polyester button down shirt that's a little too big. I'm thinking about adding a shiny white polyester vest to go with it if I can find one. That can be rockabilly, funk, whatever. The only thing it can't be is tasteful, and I don't go for tasteful.

Collared shirt and black dress pants for fancy gigs, jeans and some terrible shirt for anything else. Jackets are optional.

Generally pants are jeans, either blue or black. Sometimes cargo pants happen. Shirts are usually like a bowling shirt or a Hawaiian shirt back in the day when they were popular. I also have to wear a hat because my head is tragically naked on top and any light shining on it bakes my brain.

Basically I'm just pretty sadly uncool these days.

Back in the old days, someone videotaped one of our gigs when I was wearing all black pants shirt and jacket, playing an all black bass with black hardware and an ebony fretboard in front of a black wall.

In essence I was a head shaped balloon floating near the mic stand.

So I decided 'No more plain black clothes or instruments, ever again.' And I set out to change things. I talked to a woman who did tie-dyes. And I switched to playing mainly fretless, possibly partially because it was white. When my tie dye order came in, I now had a set of rainbow tie dyed Painters Bib overalls.

Unfortunately I had them just right before the gay community adopted the rainbow as a symbol.

You know how when you start twisting the center of a garment to dye a spiral into it, you grab the middle of the garment? On a shirt that's over your heart or so.

Bib-Alls go from your collar bone to your ankles. Twisting the center start at the crotch. And now mine was rainbow colored. I got a lot of unwelcome flirting before someone explained that.

So I switched to wearing Tshirts given to me by audience members, no matter how bad the taste was. I had a frighteningly tacky selection of little worn shirts for a while.

In fairness, I pretty much AM the prototype for the fat bass player. I'm about six feet and currently around 310 pounds. In my defense if I lose all my extra fat, I'd still be big. The skinniest I've been and been healthy was around 250. I came out of boot camp at 214. But all my ribs stuck out and I kept getting sick until I put a couple dozen pounds back on.

One gig I do, we wear bowling shirts and black pants. Other gigs I do, I'm asked to wear a black dress shirt and black pants, otherwise known as "The Universal Band Uniform (TM)." And occasionally, I get the come as you are gigs, but I still try to look pretty
