What do you wear when you play gigs?

Dark gray Dickies 874 slacks...I have a closet-full including khaki...and long-sleeved shirt (whatever is clean and ironed at the moment).

Per a handful of stage / lighting directors: Opt for dark navy over black as the latter frequently has an unnatural green shimmer under certain lighting conditions.

Since Dobbs, I wear my 14th Amendment shirt under a button down that is hardly buttoned.
I like long sleeves to keep the sweat off my bass.
Usually jeans, sometimes black jeans.
Comfortable Sketchers shoes that look dressier than just tennis shoes.
And always a cool ass hat of some sort.

It's important to grunge out to the maximum extent possible. Backyard lawn mowing clothes would be fine. Don't want anyone to get the mistaken idea that you take the gig seriously.

Wear what you will. As an audience member, I find it super cringey when bands dress up like “rockstars”. All black, chains/spikes/studs, eyeliner, hair styling etc., or they have band gimmick/stage persona. It all just smacks of insincerity.

I want to see the performers as a genuine person, not some character. It’s the one thing about Khruangbin that really turns me off…well, that and the cultural appropriation, but that’s a different conversation.

Character here: I played my last show in a Buddy the Elf Costume a couple days before Christmas. This is pretty typical behavior for me; I'm in several bands.

I took the coat off because the venue was too hot, so it was just me running around shirtless in yellow tights and elf shoe coverings. I've played in my underwear in that band before so it wasn't terribly different. Hundreds of people there that were there to see us; it was fun.

There's a time and a place for whatever makes sense. Reading this thread it's pretty evident many posters play in wedding/event bands and church type situations. That seems to be why there are so many mentions of "dressing professionally" and people talking about wearing dress clothes.

Depends on the gig. I've worn everything from a 3 piece suit to skinny jeans to a cowboy hat.

As an aside I got some decent sub work from a guy that was impressed that I asked what I should wear to his gig.

Most bands here dress casually at gigs. I typically wear jeans, a henley shirt, running (comfortable) shoes, and a hat of some kind. The rest of the band dresses similarly. We have an upcoming gig at a nearby casino (our first time there) which stipulates no jeans. And that's not a problem. I have some Old Navy black khaki type pants that I will wear that are very comfortable.

I guess I'm just curious as to what everyone wears for gigs.

Depends on the season and how close to the stage the door is.

Needin to revamp the gigging wardrobe so this thread has been a helpful reminder. Back in my old bands it was pretty simple. Nice fitting jeans and either a music/media related t-shirt (Zappas face from Apostrophe, my Trout Mask Replica shirt that said fast and bulbous, white shirt with Sigourney Weaver on it posing with the flamethrower) or a button up. The button ups were a 70's polyester shirt with larger lapels and little brown mushrooms all over it, a paisley blouse, or probably something plaid/plaid adjacent. Since then I've gotten some rad corduroy pants that, while khaki, look great with the retro button ups.

Not a great fit for my current band since it's more of a heavy psych rock mixed with art punk deal. We all wore robes to our last show. Mine is silk with palm fronds and tigers all over it, drummer in a kimono, couple fellas in bath robes. Then again, that band is sorta the anti-dance band. It's all originals we like except a "cover" of a song written in like the 13th century. Don't take requests, play for the fun of playing it at places that dig what we're doin and that's about it. Feelin out a group today actually though that's the opposite and may fit my current wardrobe a bit better (probably not). It's mostly rock and indie covers from late 90's to early 10's.
