I had seen a thread a while back asking "what does SX stand for", but I couldn't find it again. Then this morning I stumble across this interesting YouTube video. Check out the headstock shot near the end of the video. I wonder if at least the "S" is explained, or just sheer coincidence? SX owners will instantly recognize the font & a couple other logo decals as they are currently displayed on SX headstocks. Don't know if any of this is old news that perhaps I'm just catching up to, if so...sorry. I suppose since all of SX's models start with "S", it could stand for Shelter, though I have never heard of them before or pretend to know any affiliations or distribution behind Shelter. My guess is that an SJB-75 could be interpreted as a Shelter Jazz Bass. Interesting regardless.

Could be the subliminal message or perhaps Chineese code for Super Xcellent
Thena again, maybe the guys from marketing just thought it sounded cool

IT comes from the town of Essex, where the original "Fender" designer fled to avoid prosecution for cocaine trafficking and solicitation of prostitution. A man by the name of Leo Fender took the drawings he found in a bus station and turned them into the bass guitar as we know it. The mans name was Walter Rondo, totally coincidentally, for another fun fact.

Seriously though - that's pretty hilarious! If no one ever finds out the definitive meaning behind the SX name, I vote to adopt this story as its source of origin - LOL!. :D

I just thought of something, what if "SX" was a mistake in a verbal decal order like the "L" serial numbers of Fender neckplates are reputed to be the result of a misread/typo in the neckplate order?

I can see someone saying they wanted the decal to say "Essex" and someone writing down "SX" ... Hey, it could happen.
