What effects don't work for you

What effects can I do without? All of them. I run through a Behringer passive direct box into our Behringer digital board and let my sound man take care of it.

I could do without any - as I’ve done for probably 20 years or more.

But I recently acquired a source audio spectrum so I’m digging the funky filters and the chorus/phasers. It also blends in octave & fuzz which I’m trying to figure out, but could probably do without.

2 are essential to my tone! used together just huge & wooly goodness! #1) Tech 21 sansamp VT,#2) Aphex Aural Xciter/ big bottom, its not avail, any more, but its my secret to great tone!

Delay or reverb. They just sound bad in any real-world context I have ever tried. Solo bass would be fine, I'm sure, but that's not my gig.

All. I'm mostly direct through a Neve RNDI. I find that the bass tone in the house is so compromised by the big room and mic'd kit that any effects just mask the tone and note definition further.

In other words, I like them all, but I barely ever use any at all.

Distortion, for sure. Overdrive with a little "grit" maybe, but I rarely hear full-blown distortion that sounds good through a bass. I don't find myself wanting a phaser much either.

In one band we played two songs where I used very heavy distortion. The first was Blur "Song 2", 'nuff said.

The other was Neil Young's "Into the Blue" (the electric version). The guitar played pretty clean and I did the over the top heavy distortion. I thought it worked well and was very fun to play

I think it's easier to say what I do have use for.
Boost, Overdrive, Compression, Octave, Delay, Chorus.
I can live without fuzz, phasers, flangers, trem, vibrato, reverb, bit crushers, envelope filters, arpeggiators, and the Korg Miku Stomp.

Lately, a lot more than I thought I could. I was hoarding effects for a long time. Now I’m gravitating towards the importance of a great sounding bass, amp, and cab.

I’m always going to have a few pedals, some of very great, but I’m slowly dwindling them down.
