...if you play something else what is it? ...
Even from guys like Stanley Clark, Bootsy Collins(he has te electronic aspect) John Enteistle and Les Claypool. I get what your saying, there's always more to be done, but the surface has been penetrated, deeply. Your just listening to average players I assume. For me, honestly there is nothing but the bass, and there is no other instrument in the world like the bass, except for maybe its great grandfather (The Guembri)
I believe the bass is one of the most underrated instruments out there and definitely not given enough attention.
What we’ve all heard (from the bass) thus far since its inception is merely a “scratch on the surface” of what’s it’s capable of.

Yep I totally agree, and I myself am someone who pushes the boundaries of my skill. I also find myself listen to the best of the best, that's what inspires me. One thing I've never got is the "10+ strings thing" 8 is where I think it's far enough. You can't possibly use all of that(10 or more) in one PieceI have to admit that I was exaggerating a bit with that “scratch the surface” comment.
All I meant was that, even with all of the genius we’ve all heard (and I mainly only listen to exceptional players) I feel like the bass is capable of even more.
I’m constantly blown away with videos & performances I accidently trip over by people who aren't considered "mainstream".

AC/DC "Long Way To The Top" and more, it's out there. There are Celtic Rock Bands using Bagpipes, look up the Red Hot Chili Pipers (Pipers not Peppers) on youtube.Yes, this. On occasion my son will direct my attention to something or the other he's found on Youtube he knows I'll like, or at least find interesting. Bagpipes in metal music? Huh... who knew?
