What else do you play? If anything

nearly anything with strings, at this point.

i used to be split 50/50 between electric bass and drums. i don't gig on drums anymore, but used to take it really seriously- an hour a day, at least.

nowadays, i teach music full time. every week i teach piano, guitar, electric bass, double bass, viola, violin, cello. i can play all of them well, and made it my professional responsibility to learn each instrument up to a certain level of competency.

i also play a lot of mandolin lately, and have a mandocello on order.

of all of these, the ones i'd be take gigs on aside from bass would be cello or mandolin. i've played a lot of gigs on drums but don't really practice anymore, nor do i teach them anymore.

Bass
Guitar
Keyboards
in that order

Drums but I am aiming for guitar and keys too. Banjo looks like a lot of fun to boot...

In the past I have played..

Bass
Drums
Guitar
Harmonica
Mandolin

And of course, Vocals... My voice training is WAY out now... Would actually like to get that back as it is rusty as all get out... But I do like singing...

If somone put a gun to my head, and said pick one! I'd say, pull the trigger.
I agree. Can't just pick one!
Let's see... I started with piano as a little kid. Ended up winning a few contests but didn't stick with it enough to be very fluent with it today. Then trombone starting in elementary school. Picked up the guitar near the end middle school. In high school I became a brass enthusiast and tought myself tuba, euphonium, tenor horn, and F horn. I also picked up a bass but didn't get serious with it for a while. I was a bass voice in the chorus too. I know a little clarinet and a little more alto sax and try to teach myself percussion whenever a drumset is available. I still keep playing low brass and trumpet every day and give private lessons for all of that. I also collect tons of brass instruments including a superbone and an 1888 Conn Eb tuba. But last year I decided I need to focus more on one thing that was the most practical for joining bands with, and the bass was what interested me the most. My favorites are bass, euphonium, and tuba because bass clef is all that matters ;) My favorite tenor instrument is the tenor/alto horn because it retains a mellow timbre despite playing in the higher register.

Sounds about the way I started, I was in piano lessons at a young Age, learned to read music there, took up bass at ten(thanks to my dad, he plays a little guitar, and I learned I didn't like playing it that much, he got me a bass) trombone a 12. In seventh grade(14), I took up the tuba. Now I just play tuba and bass, I took up flute and euphonium for awhile and was capable of doing it, I still dable on euphonium from time to time, just wasn't into it very much. Now when I want to practice, it's tuba or bass, I don't want to force myself to play other instruments, those two are what I want to play, when I want to practice.

We need more people like you, who will teach others but still enjoy it themselves. :) sometimes it just isn't that way anymore, all about making money, lots of bass teachers don't even know as much as I do but are giving lessons.

Thanks. Yeah there are a lot of lousy teachers out there. I get terrible pay where I teach because the store takes more than half the lesson fees for themselves, but I stick around because I want those students to have the right instruction so they can take their music further and perhaps keep things like orchestral and jazz music alive.

Mandocello? What is this? It sounds cool, even just the word.

Trumpet
6 string guitar
12 string guitar
Bass
Started with a trumpet when I was 8. Stuck with it till I was 13. Someone stuck one in my hands about six years ago and I still remembered the first few bars to "Midnight in Moscow."
Started on guitar at 13. Had a couple of bands for a year or two with that.
First bass when I was 14 and was in two bands for a couple of years with that. Wrecked the old mans car when I was 16 and had to sell off most of my gear to pay damages.
Nothing till I was about 19 and then picked up a 12 string guitar. Been playing 12 stg ever since but not a lot these days.
Another elec. 6 string when I was around 30. Put together a couple of bands while playing that and rolled with it for almost 20 years. Last band with it , we had a 160 song set list.
Still have a couple of electrics but Haven't played them much in about 12 years
Back to bass about 12 years ago and that has been my main focus ever since. Currently playing in three bands .
Still pick up my 12 string from time to time. Even made some money busking with it at the beach on vacation the last couple of years.
I've been offered a spot in a couple of bands playing 6 and 12 string recently but turned them down. I rather be playing bass these days.

I used to play recorder and clarinet in school and theater bands, but haven't since in my late teens. The only instrument I play halfway decent now is bass, though I own many other instruments I like to dabble with at a rank beginner level, just for fun. Guitars, keyboards, drums, and there's a toy MIDI saxophone somewhere in a closet too.
