What fuzz/OD would you suggest for these needs?

I have a light OD (the 5th gear) which is great. I use it first in my chain and turn it on when I take solos or just want to change my tone a bit.

What I am looking for is a fuzz or heavy OD. Something that I can turn on and not tear the roof off with, and instead just get a real nice controllable fuzz or heavier distortion that works real well with an OC-2. I'm doing a jazz/funk project and a good example is how Tim Lefebvre uses distortion with guys like Mark Guiliana, except I'm not trying to copy his exact setup.

My pedalboard is optimally in this order:

5th gear >OC-2>MXR Bass Filter>(Insert OD/FUZZ here)>Corona Chorus

I will probably use the pedal 20% of the time or less so I don't need an expensive boutique pedal. Here is what I have tried so far :

Blower Box - pretty darn awesome pedal, but for what I am doing it's very tough to use without having a pretty big volume boost, no matter how I use it. If I was doing heavy, grinding music, this pedal would be staying.

Fuzzollo - just a square WAV of fuzz. Nothing subtle there. Really cool pedal, but it was more output than I needed

Pork Loin (John K modded) - This was real close. I know Lefebvre made this his go to, so you would think that would be fine, but I'd like to try and keep the pedal size smaller and also have something with a little more warmth to it.

I'm leaning towards the MXR Bass Distortion but open to other suggestions. I like mainstream makers a lot - Boss..DOD..MXR etc. But anything in the $150 range is fair game.

I would say to check out the Source Audio Aftershock as well. You can pretty much dial in whatever you'd like with that pedal.

Let me ask you this - I am not a knob tweaker. More of a set and forget it guy. Maybe do a few quick changes but thats about it. Is this pedal going to work there? I know you can plug it in to your computer and set a million options, so I was just wondering how long it took to get it dialed in.

Joyo ultimate drive ( awesome OCD chinese copy for very cheap. It beat out some of my boutique pedals)

Wren & cuff tall font Russian: my favorite fuzz for bass by far. Beleive me I've had quite a few.

If you don't like the stock drive engines then this could be a problem - and currently mine, don't get time to tweak except practice with the band and then practice time is practice time. If you have a few minutes it can be pretty good tho!

Takes about 5 seconds

It comes pre-loaded with 3 tones...a tube overdrive, a fuzz, and chainsaw from hell. You'll want chainsaw from hell. You CAN plug it in and tweak and load different sounds, but with the switch in the 'heavy' position it delivered exactly what I was looking for and what I wished all those other pedals sounded like. So you don't have to connect the USB if you don't want to.

It takes little to no time to find useful sounds using the Neuro app. The only way it takes more time is when you go in depth with all of the options. But right out of the box the pedal sounds amazing and doesn't even need to be tweaked via app to still be a great pedal. Though the real prize is when you do dig into it. UNLIMITED possibilities!

Gated stuff works great with an OC2. The team awesome fuzz machine can set subtle or heavy, has a blend and gate.

The Wren and Cuff TFR is a great fuzz pedal no doubt! I actually just sold mine though and not because it wasn't great but I was pretty much able to replicate the sound I got from it from the Aftershock. I'm sure others will disagree with me on that take which is cool! You can't really go wrong with any of the options that have been put out there.

Same for me. The Aftershock replaced a lot of my pedals. Plus like the TAFM it also has a blend and gate.

As far as the MXR Bass Distortion....meh. I was very disappointed. It doesn't sound anything like a Rat or a Fuzzrocious pedal. I just couldn't make it work.

I'm a knob tweaker. I couldn't get a sound I liked out of it. I tried. You can set it and forget it, if you like what it does. It clearly has many vocal supporters. I'm also part of the minority who doesn't care for Darkglass distortion, so I'm probably just a weirdo.

You're a bit over the map with your goals. Fuzz and OD are at opposite ends of the spectrum, and some of the pedals listed can be wildly different. If you're after more subtle things, look for overdrives. If you liked the OCD, you'd probably like a Dunwich ODB, but they are hard to find (though one is in the classifieds now) and a few dollars over your target. Otherwise, the OCD has other clones, as well, like the Fuzzrocious Demon.

The Demon is a low to medium-high gain drive with distortion-like capabilities. With the gate/boost mod, it jumps into the gated fuzz range! The Demon can do the “just on the verge of breakup” thing at low drive settings or a pushed amp sound at higher drive settings.
