What happened to Mesa Boogie cabinets?

The Powerhouse cabs are better than the Subway series.. Larger cabs are generally more efficient than smaller cabs.. They can produce more sound per watt of power consumed by moving more air than the smaller cabs..

I'm pretty sure Agedhorse has done quite a bit more "experimentation" than you have.

Now you may like the Powerhouse cabs more, and that's great, nothing at all wrong with that, but attaching "facts" that are not is another thing....

The Subway series is Mesa's attempt to compete with the lighter Markbass style of customer and reduce manufacturing costs.. But, small and light is not for everyone.. Nothing against the Subway drivers.. they are great!! Subway drivers in a larger Powerhouse cab would be wonderful.. Justin Chancellor is testing one now!! He said they are amazing!!

Except that the Subway cabinets outperform the Powerhouse cabinets in every way. They are MORE efficient, have MORE LF extension, have GREATER power handling, and do so in a (much) lighter, smaller package.

I know all about Justin's cabinets since I was the guy who designed them. They are in fact based on the Subway cabinets though a staggered 412 style, they have about the same LF extension compared with 2 x Subway 212's, the same power handling, the same response curve, almost the same voicing. All of this is better than the Powerhouse cabinets that it replaced. The major difference is that Justin was looking for a warmer, rounded bottom which is something the Powerhouse was never designed to do. This model was in fact considered as part of the Subway line from the very beginning, but the customer interest just wasn't there.

Boom! I love this rig. I think I bought it around 2008ish maybe. It’s been on tons of gigs. I recently had the amp gone through by Mesa, then I updated the speakers in the PH 1000 cab with their recommended drivers. Yes it is heavy, but still sounds amazing every time. The new subway series is awesome as well. Other than the weight difference, there’s no viable reason for me to drop $3k until I’m at a more fragile older age. By then, I’m sure things will be even lighter and my brand of choice will be Mesa.

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to debate, other than the drivers handle more power.. The JC cabs are basically a PH cab and SW drivers.. not exactly a mystery.. And just as I stated, the larger cabinet design is more efficient with the updated drivers..

No, the larger cabinet is NOT more efficient, in fact the larger Powerhouse cabinet with the PH drivers is LESS efficient. The new 412 is exactly the same efficiency as two of the Subway 212's. The porting is entirely different than the Powerhouse only the outside shell is the same.
