What happened?

I walked into GC with the intention of looking at a used Fender Deluxe Jazz or possibly a new Professional jazz (as long as I could get a decent percentage off) I ended up walking out with a new Sunburst Elite Jazz. Way more than I had planned to spend.
As soon as I played it through that Ampeg SVT Pro and 2X12 Ampeg cabinet in the store, that was it. Money was no longer an object.

The playability and feel are excellent and it sounds incredible. Better than the Deluxe it replaced and IMHO much better than the Proffessional model. Although a bit heavy.

At least I got 15% off. Damn it's a nice bass. So new stickers are still on it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I worked in a store for several years. I would tell players all the time "We don't pick basses. They pick us."

Glad you found something that speaks to you! If that ever happens to me I will walk out with it too. I almost did it with a refin '63 P bass at Carter Vintage in Nashville last year for $3,500. But I just don't play 4 string enough to justify used car money on one. It was close, though. I left there with sweat on my upper lip.

That's the way it used to be. When I was younger, I had no idea what I might come home with when I went out shopping for a bass. There was no internet then, and no big box chains in my area, so all you could do was go and see what they had at the local shops, and chose from whatever was available.

Thanks guys, glad to know I'm not alone when it come to impulse purchases. lol. I typically research the hell out of something before I buy it, but this decision was definitely on the spot.

Played it at rehearsal last night and the band loved the tone and the look of it. I love my P bass, but I think it might be relegated to back up status at least for now.

This works for folks who don't have problems with making impulse buys. You have an accurate "this is the one" sensor. I wish I could say the same but I know myself a bit better than that.

I'm not sure this qualifies as an "impulse" purchase. You went to the store looking for a bass, and you found one - just a different one than you had thought. Yeah, we all do that. Go into the store to play a particular model/brand and discover something completely different. Congrats. It's a beauty.

Wowzer, yeah, it probably WAS way more than you wanted to spend. But---what a nice, I said NICE bass!
Well, I'll say if I had the dough right then also-----I'd have gotten one too!

Today I took off the horrible Fender stock strings off the Elite, and put a set of my favorite strings, Dunlop Nickel Super Brights. Oiled the fret board, tweaked the set up. Wow!!!!! Man it plays like butter!!!! Action is superb. And the tones I can get out of it are unreal. With my P bass I was limited and frustrated at times as to what I could get out of it, but this bass is like having a bass synthesizer!.
