what head for a Hartke 410?

Its a 410 xl-series. Any suggestions on what head to buy? It's used for basic garage rock, punk, blues. Sorry if this has been posted before.

I have played on an xl Hartke for a LONG TIME.

Out of all combinations I was happiest combining it with Ampeg heads (the SVT line all sounds great through it) and Trace Elliot. I would definitely recommend checking Trace Elliot gear especially in tandem with Hartke cabs, it sounds very modern, polished and fat.

Given the nature of the Hartke XL cab, being all aluminum, basically any amp that doesn't specifically enhance harshness in their voicing will do brilliantly. For this reason alone, I personally would avoid pairing it with GK and similar amps, but that's just me.

I'm going to agree with the GK crowd. I've gigged my XL 410 with my MB200 and it rocked. That's actually my practice rig at home now. My MB500 made it even more awesomerer!

I have used the 410xl with a LH500 and it's a great, inexpensive combo. Basic, clean, loud, extra cab compatible, and you can add color with pedals very easily. If there is a knock on the above, it's weight and footprint.

I've recently moved to stacking a HD112 w/ 210xl vertically, powered by a Mesa Boogie Walkabout due to playing super small stages.

Something from GK maybe? Their old 800rb was a classic combination paired with that cab.

I must say that the GK400RB II is an amazing head. I have two of them and I used to exclusively play a Hartke HA3500. The GK beats it on weight and tone. The Hartke has more power but the GK is so efficient and I've never really needed to dime it.

It really depends on what amp tone would work to your taste with your bass. I use an Ampeg PF500 with a Hartke 4.5XL and love it. The Ampeg adds some warmth to my active Schecter bass. Plenty of power that fits easily in a backpack.

Something used. Check the power handling on your cab. There are a couple generations. The early ones (I have one) are only rated at 240 watts, so you might want to be careful about overpowering it.Current ones are 400, and there may have been another variant in between. Personally, I'd look for a used GK 400 RB for what you are describing. They are great heads, lots of clean punch, but get snarly when you push them. And around 200 bucks on the used market. But really, about anything should be fine so long as you don't hook up 1200 watts and dime the volume


I dont' know much about current hartke heads. I had one of their first series (a 7000), and it was a monster on power, but not super reliable, and kind of bland tonally.

As an aside, I can't believe how cheap these cabs are now. I think I paid 650 or 675 new in 1994 (Which is about 1100 bucks today) and now a new one is 400 bucks, and you can get used ones for like 200

GK RB series. 400 or 800.

RB if you wanna go old school (a RB 400 is within budget) and the MB 500 if you want the smaller head, which won't have the look, but it's an option, and in the budget range used.
Personally, I recommend the RB 400, as they're bulletproof.

GK 400RB. The second generation is what I have and it sounds great through my 210XL. It also sounds great and gets way loud through my Ampeg 810.

Used the Hartke 4-10 Xl with the GK 750RB for Years!! Great combo, and I was playing 5-6 nights a week, Never Failed me, Love Love Love GK!

My first "cab" was a Hartke 410 XL - which I bought at a pawn shop in maybe 1999.
I used a Hartke HA 3500 head with it.
