I am pretty much forced to use Comcast, though I hate that company and their internet tends to crash randomly, as they pretty much have a monopoly in the section of Portland I live in as the second fastest internet available here is only 5 mbps per second, which is far to slow for my uses. So anyone else in the same predicament?

For the poll I added all of the companies I could think of off the top of my head, so don't send me to the talkbass dungeon if I forgot yours ;)

I get Comcast cable internet. It's pretty fast.
Do you have fiber optic or cable?
Does your connection drop before it gets to your modem?
Do you have a wireless router? If so, you've turned on security and check traffic?

It's cable, I've already done all of the trouble shooting, my own and comcast' recommended. It's definitely on their end, but the most I've got from them is a "we'll look into it". Sometimes it will go for weeks without crashing, and I've noticed it crashes the most on Sundays.

Do you use Comcast's router? If you use your own router is the software updated? If your having trouble do you reset your router and the trouble clears?

I use a comcast router, I'm much to cheap to buy my own. When I reset the router it sometimes stops crashing for the day, but some days it's so bad that it will crash every 30 or so minutes.
Comcast may offer a newer router that's more reliable. You can always call and ask if you have the latest and greatest router they offer. There are all kinds of things that can cause the home router to hang, but a quick reset is the quickest and easiest solution most of the time.

I had no issues when I was in Comcast territory, then I moved a mile south where they don't serve. Century Link and Comcast apparently divide up their turf like gangs in this city.

Luckily, there are other smaller providers here to choose from, because Century Link had my territory but they weren't wired here for anything more than 1-mbps (which is definitely not "High speed internet" like they claim), after the first month we ditched them in favor of WAVE Broadband, and have never looked back.

The irony is that I can almost hit the 'CLINK' (Century Link Stadium) with an egg from my balcony .... millions of dollars they put into wire the stadium for real high speed usage inside and getting their name in big neon letters, but a half mile away we can only get 1-mbps from them!

Comcast... because they're the only game in town in my area. We HAD verizon dsl which at times was worse than dial-up. If I were still living in OH, I'd definitely be on Wide Open West (WOW). Not a fan of comcast, but at least they're better than verizon was.

I highly recommend the NETIS AC1200 dual band wireless router. My old router was some cheapie and ti bottle-necked my speed. Once I got the Netis, my speed opened up like a son-of-a-gun. I use suddenlink and we have the cheapest service possible. Right now we have 4 computers, 1 tv, and 3 phones on our line as we speak and this is the speed test result I just got. About a month ago my upload was always are 14. I don't know why it's always lower now.

My upload speed never gets very high, either. This is actually the best speed test I have gotten, at least as far as I can remember.

I've been pretty lucky with Comcast so far, it's rare that it goes down, but unfortunately when it does it takes my cable and land line with it. I'm using the router they provided me, it seems to work better than the one I had before (one that I bought but don't recall the brand). I've been contemplating upgrading my service to the X1 platform in a couple of months, when my latest deal runs out.

Suddenlink, especially in small rural areas, drops service the first time we get a change in weather. Cold weather and rain usually knocks it all out for a few hours. In larger towns it's not as bad, but we have had to call out techs a few times in just the 1 year I've been here.
