How is a Gmail account unprofessional?

Not saying that a hostname with your band's name wouldn't be good, but I severely disagree with a gmail account being unprofessional.

I think it just looks more "together" than professional. We used a gmail account until we got our domain set up.

Your domain name for your website and email need to match. You can acheive that several different ways. If you own the domain name "mybandname.com" your email should use that as well.

Another one here voting for gmail. Most webspace providers have the option to forward email. The band site I set up automatically forwards any email sent to any address @<bandname>.com to my gmail account.

I can search for and find emails I received years ago, if I want. They're there forever and can be checked from any computer with internet access.

Our Domain for our website likely has email. We are using wix, and we almost have the site ready to go. One of our members is a real control freak and has made the site in his image with all contacts going to him. I don't want that to happen at all. Most of the time he screws up following through for contacting & setting up gigs, so I want everyone to have access. As our band develops. Certain people will have responsibilities for specific areas, and another will be working just with booking festivals.

We are looking for a more professional look, so I will look into the domain email more otherwise I already have an unused gmail acct set up.

What looks unprofessional is having an email address that doesn't match your domain name. It's completely subjective to be sure but lots of people feel that way.

And considering that pretty much every ISP offers free email with domains and there's really not a whole lot to differentiate between webmail interfaces from a functional standpoint (not to mention that lots of people just get their mail delivered to their smartphone/laptop/tablet anyway) it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense in most cases to host a website someplace and use a different email provider.

Check out Google apps, if you work it right, you can get your domain hosted for free, including email.

I also use the email forwarding to a personal account that I check way more often, but I always reply from the domain name account. I also use the auto-reply with regularly updated info (schedules, seasonal, etc.) to thank the emailer for the emailing and let them know we've received their email and will be getting back to them soon.
