What is "party band?"

A friend of ours recommended us for an event that they can't play because they're already booked that night. The people running the event didn't want the band they had last year because they want a party band, so...just what IS a party band?

I have my opinion but I want to get others.

Cover bands that play only very well-known songs that people want to hear and probably dance to. Ideally, they have a front person that engages the crowd.

You can get the audience singing and dancing and can create the party.

If you can't pretty much guarantee to do this, you'll get no thanks and therefore stay well away.
Some people think a gig is a gig...but thats a poor response if you are so off the pace with what the bookers thinks they want.

Know the demographic the gig is required for.

My interpretation...

Solid dance music, disco and funk would likely be a part of it,

band dresses up colorfully with some choreographed moves,

flashy lights and a dynamic front person.

Do not stop after each song, look at the set list, talk among your selves on stage and the let the dancers leave the floor.

I'm working with a band in a few weeks that has the formula 110% all figured out, makes for a fun night for the audience and myself running sound.

Yeah pretty much this. My band is pretty close to this. We dont do "top 40" exclusively, but we get people up dancing most of the night and engage the audience alot so id say we are a "party band". Having played in classic rock covers and original bands, it is WAY more fun to have people up and dancing then roar when the song ends than getting the golf clap from 4 people.

Yup, seamless transitions between songs with matched tempos is a must. I've never been in a band that has figured out how to do this effectively.
