What is "party band?"

High energy, straight up recognizable Classic Rock/Country/Dance. A few buckle polishers thrown in. Mostly about a good time, gettin' drunk an' lettin' loose. AC/DC, ZZ Top, Garth Brooks... Must be danceable.
No jazz, no prog, no modern metal (except 80's hair metal). Nothing fancy.

Music that will appeal to the attractive female population. Engage them and the rest will follow and spend endless money. All upbeat groove and crowd pleasers. Strong vocals. Forget music as art.

A couple of weeks ago Mugshot Monday got a last-minute booking for a private party. It was a nice gig, backyard at the summer home of some folks who clearly had money. We got the gig because they had rescheduled the event due to rain and the band they originally booked had a conflict and committed to find them a substitute. The only other available group on the short notice was a metal band. So I guess we qualify as the "party band."
I play in a 10-piece mostly original funk band that is absolutely a great party band. Covers optional as long as you're playing uptempo danceable music...
There was a formula in the 80s and 90s that kinda went like this:
A Party Band had props. Cheap plastic hats, inflatable saxes, fifty cent sunglasses. Theyd hand all this dreck out to the drunks and dance with them while playing Bad To The Bone and Huey Lewis tunes.
The whole Party Band idea was to get the crowd participating and thinking they were an adjunct to the band. "We really can't do this without you. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!"
And then Grunge hit and the party was over.

My favorite band joke.
A polka band got a NYE job and was a hit. when the BL went to get paid, the club owner asked if they would be interested in doing it again next NYE. The BL was all excited as he agreed to the request and then asked the club owner, "Would it be OK to leave the PA?"
My literal knee jerk reaction was a band that parties way too much & out of bounds and can barely stumble onto the stage without falling over....
I think @jonathanhughes is spot on:
- "Dance to" & "engages the crowd"
HOWEVER, opinions will vary greatly on what those points entail (Square Dancing or Pogo dancing, Jerry Lewis or George Carlin entertaining... does the stage include chicken wire fencing?). Probably best to ask "the people running the event" what they believe those two points mean to them.... or at the least "what did the band last year do?"... and then not do that.

Cover band dedicated to fun (probably top 40) songs that people know and dance to, no breaks or gaps between tunes, great crowd work, inspiring lots of action at the bar $$$$.
