What is Sexy?

You are a girl, that's my guess.

Just so you know, you are going to be asking a mostly 30+ male audience what is sexy.

What's sexy in a rocker chick to me? Playing good music and not being a fake... and not asking a forum of guys what is sexy. Not being a jerk... just be yourself, it's sexy, I swear.

Unless you want a fake guy. Then I'd say go for the full on makeup, and show your boobs... either way, there are a loooot of old guys on here.

I'm one of those 30+ guys on here, and personally, if you're not all warty and drooling on yourself, the fact that you're female and playing bass is the very essence of sexy. This was true for me when I was 14, too. The Bangles' bass player is one of the reasons I play bass. She looked sexier than Susanna Hoff.

Keep your target audience in mind. If you're mainly playing for 19 yr olds, mini-skirts and over-done makeup may be required to compete with the girls in the audience. OTOH, I've been told by older guys (40+) that after a while, anyone who's young and female looks sexy.

Like Matt said earlier, being yourself is a sure-fire way to drip sexiness from the stage. Trying to change yourself on purpose will probably only result in the slutty or gross end of things. I'm talking to you, Christina Aguilera :hiding:

I am a girl. I'm also 31. So I guess I do want to know what a 30+ male audience thinks.

Thanks for the insight! It always helps to get the guys' point of view.

Yes, disenchant, what Mssr. Till implies is right. You probably should not be asking us old guys at 30+ because we're too busy applying Icy Heat to our aching joints and waxing our back hair to know what is sexy anymore.

I do recall girls who smile and are true to their personalities as being sexy. But that was before color.

Guys generally want what they can't have - women who look "easy" may initially get your attention, but only dawgs pursue them.

If you concentrate on your playing to the point where it's obvious you're a really good bassist who doesn't need the approval of guys (without coming off as arrogant), a lot of guys will see you as desirable.

I personally find it objectionable whenever I see so-called musicians who've spent way more time on their looks, wardrobe, and stage persona than they have practicing the tunes: I prefer a triumph of musicianship over attitude.

If a female musician is sexy as can be, but can't play very well, she gives "legitimate" female musicians a bad name and comes off as trivial/superficial, slutty, or both - IMO.

An older woman's POV...

Honey, if it makes you feel slutty, then it probably is. Wear a look that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Men (and women) seem to like that, more than surface sexiness.

At 43, my body ain't what makes me sexy. My *attitude* is. Men tell me they are attracted by my fearlessness, my confidence while playing. Sometimes, if I'm nervous, that is an act, but you know the old show biz saying...Never Let'Em See You Sweat!

Be confident about your playing, and in your interactions with your audience, and they will perceive you as a rock goddess, no matter what you look like! Good looks help, but they're certainly not the entire package.

Being in good health helps your confidence level, too. I can go onstage with no makeup, in torn jeans and an old concert tee, but if I've been eating well, exercising, and practicing, I feel like a million bucks, and the crowd treats me like I am!

MUST go to gym today!!! LOL!

Mostly why I'm asking is I see a lot of things on MTV and mainstream media, including Christina Agulera, etc. And I wonder--do guys REALLY think all that is sexy? Or is it the big record executives? I work with young girls who are aspiring to be like these "pop stars" and they're piercing their bellys and getting tatoos and big hair etc. If you go to a Britney Spears show (which I have) you mostly see girls and gay guys. Britney Spears is sexy mostly to girls and gay guys, I would venture a guess. But I could be wrong.

I personally believe that what guys really think is sexy differs so much from what the media shows. I've never met one guy who liked belly button piercings--not to say that some guys don't-- but all the girls who have it done do it because they think it is sexy.

Every R&B video is the same. Girls in skimpy outfits dancing. Some kind of chair scene. Hot flashy poses. Guys walking tough-guy style in slow motion. It's enough to make one sick.

The music industry is dominated by record executives. I just want to know if they actually know what they are doing when it comes to female musicians.

I would be more than happy to go see one of those shows if you provided me with ear plugs and a free ticket.

In all honesty, being a 19 year old male, I can assure you that I disagree with society's idea of sexy. I believe that a normal build is sexier than a skinny body, and I personally love some hips. Sexy to me has to do more with the personality, and frankly, covering up is sexier than showing off the goods. Want to leave something for the mind anyway.

Less makeup is good. Natural build is good. Less piercings is good.

I mean if you've got abs, show 'em off. If you've got awesome legs, it's okay to show 'em off. But don't come out in a bikini a la Christina Aguilera :)

Personally I dont goto a show to see but to hear. That said, yea the pop idols are sexy, but its not their talent or music thats sexy, its the way makeup guys make em look on TV :)

Sure they all look alike etc, but a sexy body's a sexy body, and while i also prefer the not too skinny type, skinny girls still are sexy.

Business executives want to make some dough, to do that you gotta attract the masses (ie: the people most likely to buy tickets and CDs) so they start thinkin and realize that the younger kids are the ones who buy the most CDs. Young kids being influenciable, and knowing TV tells them how to be, they throw on TV the people who are most likely to influence those kids when singing certain songs, dancing a certain way, and wearing certain clothes. And it works damn well too.

No, they don't. Supposedly, skin sells, but not for very long. Audrey Hepburn managed to be sexy without revealing everything. Judy Garland seemed to do just fine without stripping to her skivvies, as well. Same with Joan Jett, Belinda Carlisle, and a host of others I could name.

They also all had longer careers than the girls on MTV.

I think you're right. The girls dressing that way are dressing up for each other, not guys. Most guys I know think that Britney Spears, Christina, Paris, etc are all to sleazy to be sexy anymore.

Show your personality, not your skin. Let a guy use his mind's eye to imagine what's underneath, and you'll appeal to every single guy in the audience.
