What is the best compliment...

I played in a cover band in college, local bars, frats, etc. We were playing at a sorority, outdoor gig, raining, so we were in the garage. I started up the Chilli Peppers' version of "Higher Ground." This one frat fella came around the corner, apparently couldn't believe his ears, wanted to see for himself. Stood there with his jaw hanging open, didn't say a word. Best compliment I ever got.

I was at a local music store a couple of hours early for the Victor Wooten/Steve Bailey Bass Extremes performance/clinic. I was head down playing a bass they had just gotten in. I noticed a couple of people walk up and listen. I looked up and it was Wooten and Bailey, and they told me that I was a good player. I was sort of in shock, but after I talked with them for a few minutes and played a little more for them they repeated what they said and took off. I am not sure what better compliment I could get. :bassist:

This last weekend was probably the first time I got several compliments. During the break after the 3rd set, one guy I know, who is also a bass player, said "you sound good, did you get a new bass?". So I head to the bathroom, and 2 other guys, who I don't know, complimented my playing with "You're really holding it down!, sounds great". All I could say was "Wow, thanks!"

I've been thinking back to what was so good about it. First off, I did a shot of Jager and had a beer before the 3rd set. I was feeling really loose. That was it!

No, I remembered that I forgot to put in my earplug, so I could really hear everything great. That was it!

Then I remembered jacking up the volume on the kick drum mic at the start of the set. All three combined to make it a great set, I guess. I'll really find out this weekend what it was...

Mark, it doesn't get better than that. Dude!:bassist:

A few years ago I took a Master class with Jack Casady. At the first lesson, Jack looks at me and says "Master classes are students I've had in Intermediate class first. What makes you think you should be in my Master Class?" and the eyebrow goes up. Everybody in the room is so glad they aren't me. I sort of stammer out a "I've been playing for a long time..." and he just shakes his head. Wrong answer.

We learn the we will be concentrating on soloing, and guess who's first up? We go through 'Mann's Fate' and I just played it real simple and melodic. A silence, then he looks me in the eyes and says "You're a good player".
It was worth the 600 mile drive for that.

Best guitar compliment (sort of). My all original band was playing the Pantera after show party in Louisville Kentucky and Dimebag and Vinnie watch about 75% of our set and left. Later the bouncer up front told me he asked when they were walking out why they were leaving so soon and Dime said "your DJ sucks and the band sounds just like us." Since I was the only guitar player and wrote 75% of our music that made my day.

Best Bass compliment. I few well thought of musicians told a friend of mine that I might be an even better bass player.

And dream compliment from hot girl bent over. "you are going to have to back up some! I can't take it all!

Any compliment on my playing from another bassist is a good one. People who don't play always say you play well, but when a bassist says to you "Man, I didn't know you could play melodic stuff like that on a bass", that's a good night.

Also, the best full-band compliment we got recently was when the bar owner told us that we were the biggest single-band draw they'd ever had. The place we played is normally quiet and business is kind of slow. We showed up with about half our crowd and ran the staff ragged. :)

"you didn't suck."

that's #1 the other one has been given to me by one million very drunk men.

"you guys are @#$%%ing, i mean, @#$%in' like, i used to play..........like but my hands got all $%^& like, you know,..but you#$%&......like it's MUSIC man........"

My three favorite compliments:
Mike Tobias on checking out my custom Zon 10 string with a 35" scale; "How on earth do you play this thing?"

Getting hired for a gig with a former member of P-Funk because; "You make me want to play better"

Getting hired to replace the guy I was subbing for in one band because "The band just sounds better with you here. Everybody else is playing better" I was happy to get the compliment but felt it was a breach of subbing etiquette to take the job.

Peace

Drunk guys crack me up. My friend (another bassist) was playing a show at a bar, and some drunk dude stood in front of him for about 10 minutes. Screaming at the top of his lungs, "I didn't know Flea was in town!!!", and throwing horns. So loud that he could be heard over the band.

Hehehehehehe drunk people ;)

I was playing a gig at a bar and this HUGE drunk Polish guy who "played" ahem bass came up to me and started telling me I was "the Hendrix of the bass," whatever that meant. He was so big and drunk that his belly was right in my face. Then he starts telling me how I need to be the band leader and how the guitarist doesn't matter and **** him, etc. I'm just cracking up on the inside at this point. He sees my volume pedal and starts adjusting it. He thinks it is a Wah pedal and says in accented English, "You Hendrix, I pedal together we A team!" I would have normally flipped out if someone did that but he left some nice tips. (20 for playing Purple Haze-can't complain!)

went to GC with my uncles bassist one time, to check out new heads. i played on one for a while and later bought it and his cabinet that he was offerin me. when we left he said "damn boy, your good. i wouldnt sell this to you if i didnt think that you could do ****, but your good already, probably better then me. some of that Zeppelin **** you were doin is really hard. keep it up." felt really good, bc he is an amazing bassist. then a few weeks later, they were playin a concert and he saw my mom(i wasnt there) and was yellin "hey, theres ryans mom! that kid is amazing at bass, hes even better than me!" it was to a full crowd too. i have people tell me that i sound good every now and then when i play in places that arent my room.
