My roommate, originally from El Paso, said that when the fireworks go off on July 4th a lot of tarantulas come up out of the burrows. He had to go around smacking them with a shovel.

I haven't come across any tarantulas yet, but the monster wolf spiders and fire ants are more than enough to keep me from going outside and taking a nap in the grass. Chiggers suck too.

back when I worked in the tile yard, there was a chigger and large dead spider inside of one of the pallets. I took off a carton of tile, and the chigger ran straight out, over to and on top of the dead spider, then ran around the pallet at lightning speed. He kept going back and "tending to" the spider; I think he was eating it. Freaked the crap out of me

I think we're talking about different pests here. The chiggers I'm referring to are tiny little bastards (barely visible with the naked eye) that hang out in grass and bite the crap out of you leaving mosquito like sores all over you if you are dumb enough to walk in tall grass wearing shorts. I was unaware of this my first time in Texas and ended with legs covered in bites. Very annoying.

I'm not sure of what you're talking about, but it sound bloody terrifying!

someone may chime in and correct me, but I did some investigating at the time and came to the conclusion it was a chigger. Though the little bit of internetting I'm doing now is telling me I was probably wrong. But it looked very much like a chigger; tiny, bright bright red and fast as all get out

Regardless, a bug with the cajones to try and defend its meal against a human is not a bug I want around me!

Vague searches really work. I have a picture of my Granny posing with an old car sometime in the 30's. I knew she liked Chevys. I typed in 1930's Chevrolet and went to pictures and had it nailed in seconds. Other examples too. If you have a question, someone else has already asked or searched it.
