I advocate any tool for learning how to play, I just hope folks have the goal of eventually taking off the crutch.

That garbage appears to be a learning tool that seemingly helps many people learn the notes of the fretboard.
(Shrugs) If it helps someone learn then great!
Yah, I don't see it as a bad thing, especially when the huge majority of bass players have no idea what notes are where. A visual reminder could be just what people need.
I am officially a tab reader on bass, but I read standard notation on trumpet and piano. I am not sure if I can make the jump on bass without stickers and extraordinary effort.

One of the best things that helped my learn to play the bass was to ditch tab reading and just read chord charts. I started learning my fretboard way faster, and the music made way more sense to me.
Not that you were asking, but I just wanted to provide this in-case it helps at all.
Start by remembering where the half-step naturals are:

I totally get it. I've just been lazy and had no real need for it. But I'd like to be able to play some things written in standard notation, and maybe open up some gig opportunities.

It's being lazy. Just learn the damn notes. It's not rocket science.IMHO anyway.
I used words when I 1st learned.....on the E string 7th, 5th, 3rd fret spells BAG.......and on the 7th fret, going across spells BEAD... sometimes easier to remember as a word instead of a series of letters....all different learning tools

I suppose it's a learning tool until it's a crutch. It never seemed hard to learn which notes were where on the fingerboard without it, but YMMV.
I probably wouldn't show up for a gig with those on my bass though.

People have been using visual aids and flash cards to learn since the beginning of education. So now bass players gotta be all extra and opinionated about learning? lol...
Seems a useful tool to me. I would have had a much easier time if when I was initially teaching myself I was thinking notes instead of thinking fret numbers. Would have saved me time relearning things.
Those damn lazy beginners with their "learning things their own way" and pac-man video games!

FWIW I see nothing wrong with them. In fact, I wish I had them when I first started instead of that poster of the fret board on my bedroom wall.
