Everybody learns at their own pace and in their own way.

That said, some teaching methods have shown themselves to more effective for more students than others.

However, that being said - not everyone falls into that majority of learners for whom the more standard approaches work best. So in those cases, it’s often worthwhile to at least try an alternate approach.

Well, I'm not "like that". I studied basic theory, but not until I had already been playing for a while. I know what I'm playing and why I'm playing it when I do.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't give two craps about how much a bass player knows about their instrument, or any musician for that matter. Can you play or not? That's it. I've been in bands with plenty of theory nuts who clearly studied their ass off learning theory, and obviously didn't pick up their instrument enough. Being a theory major isn't going to make you move your fingers any faster or smoother.

I'm going to be the Devil's advocate on this, because I think any tool that helps people that couldn't normally learn music is a good thing.
Imagine a person with a cognitive disability, should that mean they can never learn to play music?

What exactly is the argument against them? Just learn the notes? That’s the point. I’d agree you shouldn’t keep them there forever but they’re there to help you learn the notes.

Nobody is thinking C, E, G, A, whatever when they are playing. But you need to know what you are doing.

Bass players have a reputation for being the dumbest musicians in the band when it comes to knowledge of their own instruments. You think a sax player doesn't know all the notes on his sax? No point in arguing for ignorance, because that is way too lame a position. As far as whether or not you are a freak, only you can answer that...

No, practice makes you "faster" but there's no speed that will save you if you can't easily transpose to a different key or back the band up when the leader calls "rhythm changes in F" and then just counts it in.

Be able to do both. Know your harmony and have the chops. There's never a situation when I'm like "whew, glad I didn't know that particular thing".

When my daughter started on piano, her teacher gave her little letter stickers to put in the centre octave on the keyboard. She didn't use them for too long, but they did help her out at the beginning. This seems like it could serve a similar purpose. I don't really get all the negativity...

The negativity is nothing more than people shaking their fists at beginners for not being as experienced or knowledgeable as they obviously were the day they began playing.

I'm in the camp that these are stupid. Here's a better idea. Leave your dern Snark on and read the notes as your strings vibrate.

Are you playing along with Stevie Ray Vaughan in the same tuning and playing the 7th fret on your D string? What note is that? The sticker says 'A' and the Snark says 'G#'. Which is correct?

Answer: the Snark is more right than the sticker, but my answer is 'neither' because I think of that note as 'Ab'.

Here's another sticker flaw: You have a Hipshot Xtender set so you can pedal the low Ds on a 4-string. Now when you hit the 5th fret, the sticker tells you it's an 'A' - shwoops!

I used words when I 1st learned.....on the E string 7th, 5th, 3rd fret spells BAG.......and on the 7th fret, going across spells BEAD... sometimes easier to remember as a word instead of a series of letters....all different learning tools

I do things unconventionally for loss of brain cells, but did almost the same thing - using some twisted style acronyms for the 3rd, 5th and 7th fret markers...
E - Girls Always B*tch
A - Chefs Don't Eat
D - Fever Goes Away
and, to really confirm my clouded thought process..
G - A sharp B flat Cuts Deep

Not with note names on, but student string players in the first few grades will use white tape position markers, and have been doing so for many years.
